Several Products and Practices can Eliminate Soot and Smoke Damage in Kent Houses.

There are no two fire incidents that are identical, making the preparation and preparedness for developing emergencies critical for professionals like our SERVPRO team. Our commitment that We're Faster To Any Size Disaster begins with our effective mitigation services and job scoping that determines the extent of the damage and what can be done to return the house to its original condition.

Vertical Surface Smoke Damage Deposits

Fire damage to Kent homes often means smoke and soot deposits. With high pressure and high heat fires, the turbidity of the smoke and airflow forces solid particles against vertical surfaces and into crevices. Dry sponging and other non-wet cleaning approaches can begin the restoration of these specific soils.

Cleaning Up Soot and Smoke Residues

Smoke and soot can be two of the most formidable obstacles for fire restoration in area homes and businesses. Understanding how to counteract the chemical composition of these deposits can make them much easier to loosen and remove. Some of the products and services often considered include:

Is Controlled Demolition Necessary for Kent Homes?

While our responding team always focuses on restoring and recovering over replacement, this is not always practical or possible. Fires can be a devastating force that destroys installed elements, making replacement a necessity. There are also instances where building inspection determines that while surfaces can be restored, it might be more cost-efficient to consider replacement instead.

Fire restoration and cleanup can be considerable for even experienced restoration professionals like our SERVPRO of Kent team. When high-pressure and high-heat fires have impacted the property, many wall systems, and vertical surfaces will require cleaning and wiping. Our technicians are ready to help however you need when you call (253) 850-1500.

Home Fire Illustration Dealing with the aftermath of a fire can be overwhelming. Contact SERVPRO and we'll be there for you during the entire process.

Fire and Smoke Removal Services in Tukwila Utilizes Immersion Cleaning as an Effective Agent Against Fire Damage

For materials that can stand being thoroughly saturated, immersion cleaning is a very effective cleaning method. One of the things it works very well on is Venetian blinds.

SERVPRO Provides Immersion Cleaning 101

Professional fire and smoke removal services in Tukwila that employs the right cleaning method for the material. With immersion cleaning, the content gets dipped in a bath consisting of a cleaning agent. We often use a portable basin or sink to prepare hot water and then add a cleaner such as our Ultra Content Cleaner. The process involves:

  • Immersing the object in the cleaning solution
  • Hand cleaning the item
  • Using a towel or brush to dislodge soil
  • Rinsing with fresh water

Ultrasonic Cleaning

This type of cleaning is less labor-intensive and highly effective. Items get placed in an ultrasonic tank with a cleaning solution. The sound waves then create millions of bubbles, which implode and clean the material. High temperatures and microscopic jets of water are produced during the process, which agitates and scrub the content.

Using the Proper Cleaning Method for the Material

It is much more cost-effective to restore the content of a home than to replace it. Our techs do everything possible to restore not only the content but the structural elements. We employ several cleaning methods to reach that goal. Our fire damage restoration in Kent includes:

  • Dry Cleaning – For the removal of light-to-medium soils that are non-greasy. Also used for pre-cleaning before wet cleaning. An example would be using a feather duster, vacuum, or dry-cleaning sponge.
  • Wet Cleaning – An aggressive cleaning method that is very effective on moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray & Wipe – A wet cleaning process where the cleaning agent gets applied by spraying. The item then gets wiped clean.

Professional assessment and proper matching of soot residues with appropriate products and methods after Tukwila fire damage are SERVPRO’s strengths

Fire and smoke damage in a Tukwila home can be hard to see without professional training. If you extinguish a blaze in the kitchen or a distant bedroom quickly, it might seem as though little to no actual fire damage restoration is needed. The fine soot and nearly invisible vapors produced by the flames drift from room to room and eventually adhere to surfaces. Unfortunately, a brisk scrub down of walls and counters or furniture in the room where the fire burned is not enough to ensure that all toxic and corrosive residues in fire-damaged Tukwila homes are gone. As time passes, discoloration arises on surfaces, and odors linger. If firefighters used water to knock down the fire, it also causes problems if not removed promptly and entirely.

Why Is SERVPRO Uniquely Qualified to Complete Water and Fire Damage Restorations in Tukwila?

The SERVPRO managers and technicians responding to your Tukwila house fire clean up master multiple professional interventions during coursework offered by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). They know the signs of residue and odor drift and make research-based evaluations to determine the type of soot and affected surfaces. Their knowledge permits the appropriate matching of fire and smoke damage with SERVPRO’s proprietary cleaners and tools. Using the familiarity of the elements of cleaning as taught by the IICRC, they deliver successful outcomes at a high rate, including effective:

  • Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration and Cleanup
  • Water & Fire Damage Restorations

  • Odor Elimination

SERVPRO understands the fire restoration worries of Kent homeowners

Kent is a green and lovely city in Washington. With over seventy parks and the Pacific Northwest's beauties never far away, Kent is the ideal destination for enjoying the good life. You can explore outdoor locations, take in the local arts and culture, or stop off for some delicious local eats.

A settler named Samuel Russell first came to Kent in 1853. Several others followed him quickly, and a small town soon sprang up. At first, the settlers named the area Titusville after one of their party. You can still see a "Titusville Station" sign in the city, on Gowe Street. At first, Kent was a farming community, especially after farmers discovered that hops were lucrative. Later, Kent became well known for its lettuce and dairy (it was once home to a significant Carnation Milk plant.)

Today, Kent is a major center for manufacturing. Several large companies have facilities in the city, including Boeing, Amazon, and General Electric.

Enjoy the taste of local cuisine.

Kent boasts a great food culture, with festivals throughout the year and plenty of wonderful places to get a bite to eat. Kent offers something for every palate. While you're in town, why not try out:

  • The downtown area has all the restaurants you could need, serving everything from traditional bistro fare to fresh sushi and cuisine from around the world.
  • Farmer's markets and local growers give a truly local flavor. You can visit a local distillery, pick your own farm, or cute cafes specializing in local food.
  • From alehouses to tap houses to wineries, Kent offers an array of locally produced beverages.

If you are craving something sweet, be sure to stop off at Sweet Themes Bakery, where you can enjoy handmade themed cookies. You can buy themed cookie boxes, such as mermaids or dinosaurs, that come with icing and sprinkles for the kids (and adults!) to decorate with.

Take in some arty vibes.

Kent has plenty of museums and galleries. Why not explore:

  • Third Thursday Art Walks, where you can view art, listen to live music, and enjoy street food galore. There are also free kids' activities.
  • Rusty Raven Studio features contemporary art by local creators and runs regular kids' workshops.
  • The Hydroplane & Raceboat museum features an impressive collection of vintage hydroplanes, and you can even view rare racing footage.
  • The Pickleball Museum. Kent is the home of Pickleball, and the museum teaches you all about the sport. Come and see original Pickleball equipment from the 1960s.

Tukwila’s Notoriously Stormy Weather Often Causes Local Homeowners Problems.

2/27/2021 (Permalink)

water damaged laundry room Water damage restoration is no easy task. SERVPRO has the man power and experience for any size job.

Water Damage Restoration May Be Necessary on Area Homes After Strong Storms.

As many know, Tukwila and other parts of the Greater Seattle - Puget Sound region tend to be among the rainiest and windiest areas of the United States. Unfortunately, this natural circumstance has caused local homeowners and businesses numerous costly issues over the years. These problems have resulted from everything from leaky roofs and clogged drainage systems to full-blown roof collapses. When these troublesome weather-related catastrophes occur, Tukwila residents and business owners generally suffer substantial water damage. Fortunately, though, there are often ways to prevent or mitigate the worst issues caused by rainwater and strong winds.

The Unique Weather of Tukwila

Two primary things, a high average annual rainfall and the potential for strong windstorms, set Tukwila’s weather apart from that of other regions. According to national weather statistics, the city’s average annual precipitation is over forty inches. This average annual precipitation is greater than that of either Washington State or the nation as a whole. As far as windstorms go, this community is much more prone to them than others across America. In the Puget Sound region, storms with winds exceeding fifty miles an hour are a yearly occurrence, and those having winds of more than sixty miles an hour pass through every five-to-ten years. Together, these two weather characteristics make structures in Tukwila much more susceptible to water damage than those in other areas.

The Telltale Signs of Water Damage

Local weather can damage your property in various ways, some more conspicuous than others. However, regardless of what causes it, homeowners can identify water damage by looking for the following common signs:

How Local Homeowners Attempt to Safeguard Their Homes from Water Damage

Most Tukwila residents understand the risks of living in this fine community and take appropriate steps to protect their homes from potential water damage. Some of the actions locals most often take to prevent or limit potential rainwater-related destruction are:

  • Cutting down overhanging tree limbs before forecasted storms
  • Properly cleaning and maintaining gutters and drainage networks
  • Periodically having their house professionally inspected for issues

Call SERVPRO of Kent, one of the best water damage restoration companies in your area, at (253) 850-1500 for assistance.

mold covered furniture and walls Mold remediation is no DIY project. SERVPRO technicians are IICRC trained professionals for any size mold job. Leave it to the pros.

Eliminating active mold colonies requires several strategies in residences.

With the natural humidity in the Pacific Northwest, towns like Tukwila feature many homes that continually contend with mold and microbial threats. In lower-lying areas like the basement or sellers of these properties, damp conditions can facilitate naturally occurring mold spores on organic matter. While this might seem like a common occurrence, these organisms' presence can be damaging to the property and create health effects for those exposed.

Removing Mold from Tukwila Homes

Remediation seeks to eliminate active colonization, which differs from other mold removal companies in Tukwila. Our professionals understand that your time and money are valuable commodities, which encourage an efficient and direct solution for active colonization when it exists. Remediation involves several approaches working simultaneously to protect as much of the installed structural elements as possible. Some of these techniques include:

  • Surface sanding
  • Dry ice blasting
  • Antimicrobial cleaning
  • Controlled demolition

Mold can be a threat to your home when you do nothing to overcome it. Let our SERVPRO of Kent remediators help by calling (253) 850-1500.

Carpet Extraction Solutions

To accomplish this, we must utilize special extraction tools in our recovery inventory, including:

  • Carpet wands
  • Weighted extractors
  • Light wands
  • Ride-on extraction units

SERVPRO Uses Research-Driven Best Practices as a Leader Among Tukwila's Leading Mold Removal Companies

Tukwila is a suburb of modern-day Seattle, located directly to the south of the city. Because it aligns near many waterways, railroads, interstates, and two regional airports -- King County International Airport - Boeing Field and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport --Tukwila supports much commercial activity within its boundaries. Although the city's residents currently number a little more than 20,300, many workers and consumers travel to the suburb daily, increasing the area's population during production work and business transactions exponentially.

Who Historically Lived in the Tukwila Area?

It probably comes as no surprise that the same topographical features that make Tukwila attractive to 21st-century residents and businesses encouraged a robust pre-contact habitation of the same areas by indigenous peoples. The Duwamish were among the earliest people known to live along the Black and Duwamish river banks. Evidence exists that places them in the Tukwila area since the ending of the last glacial period, approximately 10,000 years ago. Historians note two distinguishable groups affiliated with the Duwamish tribe. Each group still retains cultural and ethnic diversity:

  • The People of the Inside, associated with Elliott Bay
  • The People of the Large Lake, now known as Lake Washington
  • Both groups tell stories handed down as an oral tradition, including a tale, "North Wind, South Wind," referring to the last Ice Age and describing an ice weir (dam) collapsing on the Duwamish River.

Are Descendants of the Duwamish Still Living in or Near Tukwila?

Currently, members who identify as Duwamish are not officially recognized as a tribe by the United States government. Nevertheless, at least 600 individuals are enrolled as members and consider themselves Duwamish. They wrote and ratified a constitution, bylaws, and other legal foundations in 1925. The tribal members continue to live proudly as Duwamish, although their ancestors did not receive reservation land, even though Chief Seattle and other Duwamish leaders signed the Treaty of Point Elliott in the 1850s. The tribe bought land by the ancient settlement of Ha-AH-Poos in 2009 adjacent to the Duwamish River's mouth. Tribal members established a Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center on that location.

How Did the Duwamish Use the Land and Rivers?

Other indigenous people lived in Puget Sound-Strait of Georgia basin. They traded and perhaps intermarried with the Duwamish. Some individuals enrolled in the federally recognized Tulalip Tribes of Washington. Pre-contact villages were scattered. In the spring, the Duwamish foraged for salmonberry shoots and fiddlehead ferns. As they ripened, the people picked the following to eat fresh and to dry and combine with fat and protein (pemmican) for winter storage:

  • Thimbleberries
  • Salal
  • Raspberries
  • Salmonberries
  • Blackberries
  • Serviceberries
  • Strawberries
  • Huckleberries
  • Wapato

The Duwamish hunted and fished in the summer into fall, drying the proteins for later consumption:

  • Deer
  • Elk
  • Crayfish
  • Freshwater mussels
  • Shellfish
  • Salmon (fished intensively from mid-summer through November, with evidence of the use of dams)

Winter food additions included:

  • Duck
  • Beaver
  • Muskrat
  • Raccoon
  • Otter
  • Bear

What Was Indigenous Housing Like?

The Duwamish built longhouses against the cold temperatures of the winter. During the spring, they were on the move and camped away from the longhouses until they returned for the salmon run. Over the winters, they improved their housing stock, created art, socialized and shared stories and oral traditions and ceremonies.

Did the Duwamish and Other Tribes Trade and Share?

Although other indigenous groups were known to plan raids on the Duwamish winter stores, evidence shows the tribe had an intricate trade and potlatch network that:

  • Distributed resources to areas where want was great and many required sustenance
  • Planned ceremonies and feasts that preceded possession sharing (potlatches)

Is Tukwila an Indigenous Name?

In Chinook jargon, Tukwila means nut, specifically hazelnut. "Chinook jargon" is a nearly extinct form of communication that indigenous peoples in the Northwest used to conduct trade. The origin of the city's name is celebrated even today, with Tukwila known as the Hazelnut City.

Can SERVPRO Provide Reliable Assistance as a Mold Removal Company in Tukwila?

Much like the multi-talented Duwamish, we offer our help as a mold removal company to Tukwila business owners. Coping with mold growth and resultant damage fits well within the provision of our core service of water and flood damage recovery. Our extensive experience with water damage and its restoration gives us a unique perspective on mold abatement.

What Is the Key to Mold Remediation?

No matter how well our highly-qualified crews respond to mold removal challenges, SERVPRO managers and technicians realize that mold growth cannot be avoided in a commercial building if moisture remains unmanaged. Mold spores exist everywhere, including inside your store, restaurant, office, or other business space. Fortunately, the spores cause few problems if they do not absorb moisture. Once water activates spores, they proliferate into ever-expanding colonies.

Is Elimination a Reasonable Goal for a Mold Removal Company?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the mold remediation standard for the US, used for schools and commercial buildings. They stress remediation of a mold problem rather than promising eradication because it is impossible to rid a home of all mold spores. What SERVPRO can do is

  • Locate the mold.
  • Contain the space where the mold grows to prevent drift of contaminants.
  • Remove the current mold colonies by
    • Scraping and brushing from solid surfaces.
    • Employing controlled abrasion with dry ice or soda to remove mold from porous materials and incapacitate deeply embedded hyphae (branching filaments of mold organisms).
  • Clean and disinfect the previously moldy surfaces using EPA-registered products to inhibit mold rebound.

How Do Mold Removal Companies Give Business Owners the Best Chance of New Outbreak Suppression?

Because of the clear connection between our work with water loss restoration and fungal damage issues, our mold removal company takes a long view. We inspect your commercial space looking for water damage vulnerability. Our familiarity with water loss mitigation and remediation results in comprehensive restoration actions that rid your business of exposure to leaks and breaks in pipes, structures, and appliances. We also offer general contracting services to repair and rehabilitate water and mold damage that cannot be restored without controlled demolition and rebuilding.

Have confidence that the management and crews from SERVPRO of Kent are among the best trained and equipped mold removal companies in the area. Call (253) 850-1500 to schedule an evaluation and planning session for mold remediation to get your business back on track.

SERVPRO Sends Fully Equipped Water Mitigation Teams to Kent Properties When There is A Water Spill

You can consider Kent, WA, a rainy place since it receives 43 inches of rain per year, unlike the national average of 38 inches. However, it tends to receive less snow at only 6 inches a year, unlike the 28 inches average for the entire country. The months of July, August, and September are considered the most pleasant, while December and January are the most uncomfortable. The cosmopolitan city is set around forests, mountains, and a backdrop of water, and therefore the area has many trails to jog, walk or bike. Some of the popular trails include:

  • Soos Creek Park Trail Head, a 6-mile paved trail that goes through moderately wooded areas. You can expect to find joggers, walkers, bird-watchers, runners, and even skaters on this trail.
  • Green River trail runs mostly on the eastern bank of the green river. The Kent part of the trail is 10.46 miles and gives one a chance to view Mt. Rainier, birds, and other wildlife along the way. There are benches, picnic areas, and restrooms along the trail.
  • Clark Lake Park, which is 130 acres and includes various activity areas, including paths for walking and the lake where you can ride a boat. It is essential to note the part rules, including the prohibition of operating motor-powered boats and swimming.
  • Russel Woods Park is part of the Kent Valley Loop trails. There are designated parking areas and trails for walking or bicycling.

The Hop City

The city of Kent was incorporated in 1890, the second one in King County after Seattle. The name Kent was chosen because of the widespread production of Hops in the area in the 19th century and because Kent, England, was already well-known for the production of the same crop. Hops are a staple in beer production since the flower acts as an antibacterial during the production process. It also helps add bitterness and a pleasant aroma to the final product. Most of the world's supply at the time was sourced from Europe. However, in the 1860s, an aphid invasion destroyed the crops in Europe, leaving beer makers in trouble. Kent was chosen as the alternative source because of the abundance of fertile land and a valley close to a port.

The largescale production of hops introduced many changes in the area. For instance, the seasonal workers used to travel to the area to pick the crop during harvest time. The workers were from all spheres, including Native Americans, European-Americans, and Chinese. The need to transport the workers and the produce led to the development of railroads. Surprisingly the same thing that led to the boom caused the bust when aphids found their way into the area, devastating crops. However, the infrastructure remained, allowing the area to transition to other economic activities such as warehousing and manufacturing, helping sustain the locals even today. Currently, the town of Kent has a mix of an urban, suburban feel with a population estimate of slightly over 130,000 in 2019.

Renowned Warehouses in the Kent Area

Finding the right warehouse for business or personal use can be challenging. The presence of many warehouses in the Kent area makes it easy to find one that suits your needs perfectly. Some of the exceptional services warehouses offer include:

  • Short or long term storage of a wide range of materials ranging from foodstuffs to hazardous materials
  • Cargo palletizing, packaging, crating, trans-loading, and devanning.
  • Specialized storage such as temperature-controlled storage and distribution
  • Onsite laboratory and X-ray examination of packages

Some of the outstanding warehouse services in the area include United Warehouses located in the heart of the Kent valley. It has 30 truck docks and is served by the Union Pacific rail. There is over 190,000 square foot of space at the facility and is convenient to both the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Seattle.

Northwest Harvest is another notable facility. It specializes in collecting food from businesses, foundations, and individuals and then distributing it to food banks, high-need schools, and meal programs all over the Washington state. The service came by when community leaders formed an interfaith organization named The Ecumenical Metropolitan Ministry (EMM), which sought to identify and address problems faced by the poor and disadvantaged in the community. When aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, cut down its workforce from 100,000 to slightly over 30,000, unemployment spiked from 2.9% to over 13% by 1971.  EMM opened 34 foodbanks as a short-term measure to counter the crisis. However, the initiative became permanent as other challenges, such as the 1982 food stamp cuts by the Reagan administration, developed. By 2013, distributions by Northwest Harvest had increased to 32 million pounds from 1 million in 1980. Apart from the collection of foodstuff, Northwest Harvest also accepts help from volunteers.

When Does SERVPRO Help with Water Mitigation in Kent Properties?

Water intrusions can affect Kent properties at any time, day or night. Such incidents can also happen when no one is around. After water spills, mitigation is necessary to remove standing water and address any damage to materials. However, depending on the period it takes to respond or the amount of water spilled, it might be impossible to fix some damages.  SERVPRO helps property owners find viable solutions for any kind of damage.

One of the main concerns after a water spill is moisture migration to cavities or hidden property sections. Removing such moisture is essential to prevent deterioration of materials or microbial growth, which leads to mold development. SERVPRO has IICRC certified Water Restoration Technicians who use various approaches to reach and remove such moisture, including:

  • Opening up cavities by drilling weep holes or making flood cuts
  • Removing soaked, porous materials such as drywall and insulation
  • Ventilating the wet cavities. The process involves blowing hot, dry air into the wet areas using air movers or specialized equipment

Where necessary, SERVPRO crews use advanced techniques such as freezing items or keeping them in heated areas to halt deterioration.

SERVPRO of Kent has experienced technicians who always examine the full scope of the loss before starting water mitigation processes in Kent properties. Call us at (253) 850-1500 when you need assistance.

Does Household Air-freshener Get Rid of Burnt Odors in Kent?

10/25/2020 (Permalink)

fire damaged home Tackling smoke and odor can be a massive challenge without professional assistance.

Dealing with Fire and Odor Damage Requires Powerful Cleaning and Deodorizing Agents. SERVPRO Assists Kent Residents with Fire Odor Issues.

Why is air-freshener bad for fire odors?
The presence of burning smells in your Kent home after a fire can be persistent and unpleasant. A housefire releases a considerable amount of gases and chemical compounds into your home. Some of these gases may be volatile odor particles that remain due to a lack of indoor ventilation. Masking agents, like air-freshener, are rarely the primary method that SERVPRO odor control technicians (OCT) use to bring an odor under control. Fire odors typically linger in a property due to volatility, which describes how quickly liquids change to a gas. A burning smell is full of highly volatile particles, which results in a stubborn odor that does not disappear after using air-fresheners.

What affects fire odors in the home?
    •    The volatility of microscopic odor particles
    •    Presence of moisture which can increase the perception of odors
    •    Porous materials in the home which can absorb odor particles

What chemicals control fire and burnt smoke aromas?
If air-freshener does not get rid of fire and odor damage in your Kent home, then you can resort to more powerful control agents. SERVPRO technicians frequently use pairing agents in combination with air-fresheners to tackle odor appropriately. Pairing agents bond with odor particles on a chemical level. Some of these pairing agents are humectant and cause odor particles to fall onto surfaces where they can be wiped away. Other pairing agents change the properties of an odor molecule neutralizing or destroying the odor.

What are other odor chemicals used in fire restoration?
    •    Enzymes that can digest and break down organic materials such as protein smoke residues and odor.
    •    Air purification uses an electronically charged grid to kill any odor-causing micro-organisms.
    •    Oxidizing substances are usually reserved for severe fire situations because inhabitants cannot remain on-site during an ozone generator operation.

Tackling smoke and odor can be a massive challenge without professional assistance. Contact SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500.

How Can Kent Homeowners Determine What is Causing Attic Water Damage?

Certified Restoration Technicians Perform Water Mitigation for Kent Attic Leaks

Attic leaks are among the most common maladies that can affect a home. Kent homeowners should keep an eye out for signs like damaged roofing, ventilation system troubles, and plumbing concerns. These factors can contribute to water damage that can compromise flooring, walls, subflooring, insulation, and any belongings you may have stored in your attic.

When your Kent home requires rapid-response water mitigation, SERVPRO is a phone call away from returning your property to a preloss state. Your local franchise location enjoys the benefits of both being locally owned and operated and access to the broad array of resources that have allowed SERVPRO to respond to calls from over 1,700 locations in the United States and Canada.

What Factors Contribute to Attic Water Damage?

  • Condensation. Attics are contained spaces prone to collecting humidity, especially if your HVAC system is in the attic. Consider installing a dehumidification system to keep potential water damage under control.
  • Roof damage. Whether shingles and flashing are compromised by wind, rain, or an accident, your roof is a crucial line of defense that sits between your attic and the elements. Have your roof inspected by a professional once or twice a year, especially after inclement weather.
  • Ductwork. Your heating and cooling systems can cause the ducts to expand and contract with temperature changes, leading to potential leaks and gaps in your ductwork over time.

What Principles Make SERVPRO’s Structural Drying Process Effective?

Technicians are well-versed in determining how to dry a structure with commercial-grade equipment. Several factors are taken into account during the drying process, including the relative humidity of a given area, the specific humidity of surfaces damaged by water like wood and drywall, and the ideal temperature and humidity levels to facilitate faster drying while minimizing secondary water damages.

Why Do You Need A Fire Cleanup/Restoration Crew That Understands Odor Removal?

9/25/2020 (Permalink)

Family in a home Our fire damage experts can have your home back to its original state, “Like it never even happened.”

Kent Homeowners Want Their Homes To Smell Good After Fire Cleanup/Restoration.

Kent homeowners do not want to deal with a disaster in their house. However, no matter how careful you are,  disasters can still happen. When it does, SERVPRO of Kent is here for you 24 hours, all year round. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster, so it is a good idea to call us as soon as you can.

If you need fire cleanup/restoration in your Kent home, it is essential to choose a company that understands odor removal. Our SERVPRO customers often tell us that the lingering smoky smell is one of the worst parts of a fire in the home. Even when the house is cleaned up, and life is back to normal, the smell of soot can be overpowering. It is hard to move on from the trauma of a blaze if the smoke smell is a constant reminder.

Why is it so hard to get rid of smoky smells?

Smoke is a notoriously tough odor to deal with. If you happen to know someone who smokes cigars or even burns incense and candles, you see how the smell of smoke lingers. This is much worse after a fire in the home, where there was a lot more smoke.

Soot is created during incomplete combustion of materials in a fire. The combination of the small soot particles with the warping of surfaces as the fire burns makes it easy for soot to bond to all kinds of things. Soot can bond to:

  • Wooden furniture and floors
  • Melted plastic surfaces such as kitchen utensils or toys
  • Textiles, including clothes, linens, and towels
  • Books, magazines, and artwork

There are several different types of soot, including dry soot, wet soot, and protein soot. Dry soot is easy to wipe or vacuum away, but wet soot is much stickier and bonds deeply with surfaces. Protein soot, which usually occurs due to a kitchen fire, is particularly bad-smelling.

Why is odor removal such an essential part of fire cleanup and restoration?

The first step in fire cleanup is assessing the situation and drawing up a cleaning plan. SERVPRO technicians use a range of mechanical actions and carefully chosen cleaning products to remove soot stains and restore your home.

Our team can also plan and supervise restoration jobs, such as:

  • Removing and replacing damaged parts of the walls or ceilings
  • Fixing or disposing of soot-damaged electrical items
  • Hanging new wallpaper and replacing burned carpets
  • Sending rugs and drapes out for professional cleaning at our off-site facility
  • Remediating smoke damage on furniture and textiles

We also extract water leftover from fire-fighting and dry out your home if needed.

When we have finished cleanup and drying, we turn our attention to odor removal. Odor removal is an essential step because smoke particles can spread throughout your home and cause nasty smells. Our job is to locate both obvious and not so apparent sources of odors and remediate them.

What can SERVPRO do to remove odors?

We train our technicians to use a range of odor-fighting techniques. In cases of fire cleanup/restoration, we might choose from:

  • Air scrubbers that have several powerful filters, including carbon filters, to trap soot particles
  • Ozone that which energize oxygen to create ozone, which in turn traps odors by oxidizing the odor-causing particles
  • Hydroxyl generators that transform contaminating particles into a harmless mixture of water and carbon dioxide
  • Thermal fogging that uses heat to produce a fine fog of cleaning chemicals that is easy to spray into the tiniest nooks and crannies

The choice of technique is individual to each situation. We train our teams to understand the theory of odor removal and assess which approach is best.

For example, ozone generators are powerful but are not safe for use while your home is occupied. Ozone can also be harmful to pets and plants. Ozone generators are a good choice if you are not living in your home during remediation. Hydroxyl generators are gentler and might be a better choice if you live at home during remediation. Hydroxyl generators are safe for use in occupied houses. Thermal fogging is not always suitable for delicate fabrics, so our technicians test all textiles before using a fogging machine.

What about smelly carpets or other textiles?

Sometimes smoke smells get buried in carpets, drapes, rugs, linens, and clothes. We can use spot cleaning or ultrasonic cleaning to dislodge soot particles and remove odors. We can also send items to our cleaning facility for gentle yet effective hydraulic cleaning using the ESPORTA system.

If you are worried about smoky smells after a fire, call SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500.

What Do Homeowners Need When Their Tukwila Home Floods from A Storm?

9/20/2020 (Permalink)

flooded bedroom with items floating on the water Flooding in your home can quickly get complicated to deal with. Contact SERVPRO 24/7 for professional remediation services.

Tukwila Residents Need the Experienced, Professional Restoration Provided by SERVPRO

What Are the First Actions Taken?

SERVPRO begins clean-up in Tukwila with the following:

  • Spray standing water and the surrounding surfaces with an antibacterial agent
  • Remove standing water with a combination of pumps and other extraction devices
  • Thoroughly clean the now exposed surfaces to eliminate sources of damage and potential health threats

Why Does SERVPRO Begin by Spraying Chemicals in A Residence?

Any flood damage in Tukwila homes is a problem, but when the water comes with a storm, there is an additional issue with contaminants. These include dirt, animal waste, fertilizers, and even human waste if the storm was intense enough to backup nearby sewers.

Our technicians match anti-bacterial agents with the affected surfaces to carefully clean everything from drywall and wood floors to outlet covers and appliances. Matching the right cleaner means that we not only clean everything but also work to preserve the surfaces. If the structural property (e.g. drywall) does not absorb too much water, then technicians can leave panels in place, which eliminates the cost of replacing them.

What Happens with Personal Property?

The initial cleaning usually takes care of items with hard surfaces, such as tables and bookcases. For upholstered furniture, technicians place the items on blocks or pellets to help drain excess water. Once up, they use a cleaning agent with a brush or powered agitation device to work it into the fabric. To dry the items, they next use exhaust fans to increase air circulation and air movers to force warm air over the surface which forces out the moisture.

To begin restoration of a home here or in Maple Valley, call SERVPRO of Kent today at (253) 850-1500. We are here to provide a safe, clean environment so local families can get their lives back to normal.

Why Does Drywall in Kent Homes Get Removed After Water Exposure?

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Close up of water flooding on living room parquet floor in a house Our general contractors can reinstall new materials after restoration “Like it never even happened.”

Drywall is a sensitive building material to water exposure, making it often one of the first elements to get removed and replaced after a disaster in Kent.

Porosity is the ability of a material to allow water inside of it, and there are many porous materials in the construction of your Kent home. Drywall is among the most sensitive materials used in modern construction. Because of its positioning and ability to become readily exposed to water damages, avoiding these concerns is often impossible. Absorption can begin almost immediately with sheetrock and continue until the material is overburdened with water and falls apart.

After construction materials become exposed, water damage repair for Kent properties is often required. For the drywall, this process begins with removing the baseboard and wood trim to provide access for drying and test the wall with probing moisture meters and determine the likelihood of salvaging the wall. It is most often advisable and more cost-efficient to remove a portion of the drywall rather than restoring for multiple reasons:

    •    Access to Damaged Areas for Drying
    •    Access to Plumbing for Repairs
    •    Visual Inspections for Microbial Threats

What is the Process for Removing Portions of Drywall?
Because full panels of 8x4 drywall do not always need to get removed after a water disaster, we determine a set dryline based on how far up the gypsum water has wicked from the baseboards. This step gets completed with a combination of thermal imagery and moisture meters. Once this line is marked between undamaged and unsalvageable materials, we can cut out what must get discarded and begin restoration work as necessary.

With better access to the damaged area, drying processes can be more efficient and cost-effective for the customer. Our general contractors can reinstall new materials after restoration “Like it never even happened.” Give our SERVPRO of Kent team a call today at (253) 850-1500.

Why Kent Residents Trust SERVPRO to Guide their Home to Recovery from Mold, Water, Storm or Fire.

SERVPRO Can Assist to Ensure There Are No Ongoing or Underlying Issues After Your Kent Disasters.

Enacting an insurance claim is never a nice feeling. Not only are there ongoing issues within your Kent home, but there is also a lot of filing and expense to consider. Here at SERVPRO of Kent, we value our customer service as much as our expert restoration. Our owner Kirk Mcdonald is the proud receiver of award recognition in this community and has built us a diverse roster of restoration technicians. We currently cover mold, water, fire, and storm-related damages, bringing with us a can-do attitude and a wealth of experience dealing with disasters, as well as the homeowners that suffer them. Contact us today to see how we can help you overcome a property emergency cleanly and efficiently.

Water

The impact of water damage in your Kent home can be a short-term blip or a longstanding issue. Which of the two options occurs depends on how well you respond to the initial problem. Moisture can become cancer for a property bringing in mold, bacterias, and rot, which can appear as yellowing, discoloration of fabrics or paintwork, and unpleasant odor. However, you do not need to panic. We can help to mitigate existing losses, reverse some damages, and help you to complete a stress-free claims procedure.

Using professional restoration services is your home's best chance of making a complete recovery with no secondary damage concerns. SERVPRO technicians live and work in Kent, allowing us to guarantee a call-out time of within four hours of notification of loss. The shorter the call out times are, the more likely it is that precious items like carpets, furnishings, and upholstery can make a full recovery when items like these suffer exposure to moisture for a prolonged period the likelihood of permanent harm increases.

SERVPRO restoration service trucks are equipped with state-of-the-art air-scrubbing equipment. Air-scrubbers fitted with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) grade filters can remove microbes as small as 0.3 microns, restoring your indoor air quality to its preloss state.

Fire

Fires release hot smoke into the surrounding environment, which can contain chemicals as well as leaving behind a residue of soot and ash. During a fire, smoke is attracted to cooler surfaces, which may result in the interior of cabinets, cupboards, and drawers sustaining substantial fire damage in your Kent home. To complicate matters, interior cabinets often feature unfinished materials, which, during the high-pressure of a fire, can result in soiling bonding with the surface of your fittings.

SERVPRO restoration services tailor our approach to the specific needs of each Kent resident. We achieve this by conducting a thorough pre-test of materials as well as smoke deposits. Some deposits may be dry and comfortable to vacuum away, and others may have a greasy, oil-based texture that requires a concentrated, attentive restoration service. There is also the issue of smokes or soot spreading during cleaning and affecting previously unaffected areas.

One way a Kent homeowner can speed up the restoration service is by covering any items, surfaces, and floors with old sheets to prevent cross-contamination. SERVPRO technicians can deploy negative air-pressure machines during cleaning to draw any remnants of soots or smoke out of the affected area. The ducts of a negative air pressure machine draw soiling out of the affected area and are released outside of the home through an exterior exhaust, creating negative air pressure. These can be vital in preventing cross-contamination and removing larger particles that can affect indoor air quality.

Mold

We make it our mission to inform homeowners with mold damage in Kent about how and why these issues occur. By sharing our accumulated knowledge and experience, SERVPRO restoration services hope to reduce the impact of microbial fungi across this community. It is crucial to understand that mold is a natural part of your home environment. It is only when these dry spores come into contact with moisture and proliferate that mold becomes an issue for a Kent homeowner.

Mold proliferates when there are ideal temperatures, a food-supply as well as a source of moisture. The first thing SERVPRO can do in your property is to find, dry, or shut off the source of moisture. This vital action prevents mold from coming back during or after the restoration service. SERVPRO technicians may also recommend you install a vapor barrier or consider replacing insulation in some regions of your Kent home if you suffer from persistent microbial growth issues.

Industrial cleaning equipment can make a restoration service much less time-consuming. At SERVPRO, one versatile piece of equipment we use is a truck-mount. Truck-mounts are adaptable and can be used in water, fire, and storm restoration services. These equipment combine an extraction tool, heating elements as well as dispersal of cleaning agents. During microbial remediation, SERVPRO technicians can load a truck mount with anti-microbial cleaners and apply it directly to areas of infestation in the home, such as upholstery, to not only clean these items but also protect them against future damages.

Storm

There is a tight timeframe when it comes to storm damage here in Kent. In rough weather conditions or the threat of an impending flood, you may need to evacuate your home temporarily. SERVPRO recommends that you put together a storm preparation plan well ahead of time as well as a kit of valuable documents, medicine, and communication equipment. Ideas for storm kits are available on state websites as well as news agencies and libraries. Planning does not make a storm emergency any less debilitating, but it can smooth the transition period and secure your safety.

For Kent homeowners, being displaced can cause anxiety. While away, there is a chance your home and contents suffer exposure to the elements. SERVPRO is here to safeguard your property during the interim period. Our role is a go-between for first responders and general construction services. We can enter the property, restore power, perform safety and scoping tasks as well as begin to mitigate losses immediately.

Emergency services may include board-ups or sealing cavities in your Kent home's structure using tarps. Inside the property, we can rapidly remove standing water, pre-clean carpets, and put in place equipment to begin the drying process. These steps can prove vital in the restoration service, preventing excessive loss as well as creating a safe space for third-party workers to enter and perform specialist rebuilding.

When you face a property emergency, you are not alone. For water, mold, storm, or fire-related damages, contact SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500.

Let SERVPRO Lift Some of the Stress Surrounding Water Damage Repair for Your Kent Warehouse

Commercial building owners in Kent often rely on their cleaning staff for entry-level water loss response. This can be a good work-around for the short term. Still, professional water remediators must review the situation to ensure that all hidden water and absorbed moisture is addressed. Failure to remove all water and dry the structural components exposes your business to the risk of permanent water damage and secondary concerns like mold growth.

How Can I Be Sure the Entirety of the Water Damage Is Found and Remedied?

When a supply line bursts in your Kent warehouse, water damage repair requirements guide your next moves. You have a tight timeline because water’s corrosive action is immediate and progressive. Unremoved water or high moisture levels in porous materials also host mold growth if not managed in the first 24 to 48 hours. We do not rely solely on a visual inspection, but also leverage our training from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to locate water that migrated from the pipe break using moisture detection tools and infrared imaging.

How Can Vast Amounts of Water Be Removed from a Large Warehouse Space?

One benefit of teaming with SERVPRO is our scalable workforce and equipment inventory. It is not fiscally sustainable for your company to own and store a fleet of water damage repair equipment nor employ dozens of staff awaiting a water emergency. On the other hand, our ability to respond fast and with adequate resources is precisely why we exist, to help our community business partners. To that end, our crew:

  • Assesses the scenario, including performing a safety inspection and moisture/fluids detection
  • Positions and operates appropriate quantities of water removal equipment, including:
  • Pumps
  • Truck-mounted extractors (each capable of removing 36,000 gallons daily)
  • Portable extraction units for recessed and otherwise confined spaces
  • Performs controlled demolition such as flood cuts of drywall between wall studs and drilled or sawn holes in other structures to release water using our construction division crew later for repairs
  • Plans and implements structural drying with heat, air movers, and dehumidifiers

Contact SERVPRO of Kent when a water damage repair situation has your cleaning crews drowning. The additional trained workers and equipment are just a call away at (253) 850-1500.

Can Flooding Interfere With The Energy Efficiency of My Kent House?

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

flooding in home A flooding incident can cause long-term problems such as higher power bills or discomfort.

SERVPRO Has Extensive Experience Resolving Flood Damage Related Issues in Kent Homes

If you always worry about the home maintenance expenses you are likely to incur in the future, you are not alone. Many homeowners worry about the uncertainties posed by unexpected repair bills. Even after resolving the initial damage caused by flooding, other problems can keep cropping up, later on, causing inconveniences and costing more money. For instance, certain factors from flooding can bring down the energy efficiency levels of your Kent home, leading to higher bills.

Which aspects of flood damage affect energy efficiency in Kent Homes?

    •    Damage to insulation leading to loss of R-Value
    •    Foundation shifts preventing doors and windows from sealing properly
    •    Problems with heating systems such as furnaces

As the floodwater spreads around the Kent property by wicking through materials or other processes such as evaporation and condensation, it affects various materials, including drywall and insulation. In most cases, the restoration of damage caused by floodwater involves making flood cuts a few inches above the visible water line on the walls to remove the materials soaked directly by the water. However, moisture migration might extend beyond the visible water line, thus affecting other materials.

How does moisture affect insulation?

Different types of insulation react differently to water exposure. For instance, cellulose mattes when wet, fiberglass may not change physically, while mineral wool may develop rust. Apart from the physical changes, water also affects insulation in other ways, thus diminishing its effectiveness. For instance, the resistance or R-value is temporarily or permanently lost when the insulating material accumulates moisture because water is a better conductor of heat than air.

Our SERVPRO technicians inspect walls thoroughly using penetrative and non-penetrative moisture meters to establish the true moisture spread patterns. In case you have fiberglass insulation, we can restore its full protective capabilities through drying. For other types, we might need to remove and replace all the wet insulation to ensure your property remains energy efficient.

How does a shifting foundation from flooding cause energy inefficiency?

Flooding increases the hydrostatic pressure in the soil, which pushes against the foundation of your structure. Foundation shifts can occur depending on factors such as the soil type or the time it takes for the floodwater to recede. The level of shifting differs, so in some cases, it might be pronounced while in others, it might only be slight. A slight shift can leave gaps around exterior doors and window frames, but since it is not an obvious problem, signs like cracks or sticking doors or windows may not develop, so you might not notice immediately.

Our SERVPRO technicians are aware that such shifts happen after flooding events, so we inspect all openings leading to the exterior of the house for signs of misalignment. In case we notice a problem, we can advise you immediately so that you involve a building contractor who can help fix the problem.

Does flooding cause severe damage to furnaces?

When considering the effect of flooding on energy efficiency, you should not forget the source of the heat. The heating system has several constituent parts, including:
    •    Air ducts
    •    Electronic boards
    •    The furnace

There are four prominent types of furnaces used in heating systems:
    •    Oil furnaces
    •    Natural gas furnaces
    •    Electric furnaces
    •    Propane furnaces

When the HVAC system is exposed to floodwaters, various damages can develop, including clogging with dirt, corrosion of electronic components, damage to valves and other controls, or breaches to the refrigerant system. One this that is even more worrying is that the system may look okay from casual observation and might even run when you turn in on. However, it is crucial to have it thoroughly inspected to establish which parts may require replacement to guarantee its proper functioning or even to prevent pre-mature failure.

Since flooding situations differ, you might not be sure whether you need to involve a professional HVAC technician. Our SERVPRO crews can help you make the right decision by considering the dominant factors in the flooding incident that affects your property.  We inspect the layout of your system and then consider the depth of the floodwater that breached your property. If we establish parts of the system were submerged, we try to estimate how long they remained submerged, then we can advise you on the best course of action. If the damage caused by flooding is addressed in time, your HVAC system can continue performing optimally, allaying any fears you have about energy efficiency.

A flooding incident can cause long-term problems such as higher power bills or discomfort. SERVPRO of Kent can help resolve any issue that might trigger such an outcome, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (253) 850-1500.

How Can I Repair My Maple Valley House After My Walls Inside it Gets Burned as a Result of a Fire?

7/9/2020 (Permalink)

House Fire Knowing how smoke behaves in a structure can help us mitigate any issues caused by the blaze.

For Fire Damage Restoration After Building Materials in Your Home in Maple Valley Get Torched Call SERVPRO

It can happen fast, one minute you are just trying to cook dinner for your family, and then suddenly you notice your Maple Valley kitchen is in flames. Mishaps, while cooking is the most common cause of structural blazes. Since your appliances are usually nestled against one of your walls, there is a good chance your drywall and studs can become fuel.

What happens to my house when it gets partially burned?

During a fire damage disaster in Maple Valley, flames can continue to engulf your building materials and contents until the fire gets extinguished. If your walls or other items get severely charred, then our SERVPRO technicians can remove and replace them in sections. Since different parts of the blaze are hotter than others, some fuels may not fully combust or turn from a solid to a gas when the heat is applied. These partially combusted particles can then travel throughout your house in the form of smoke. The smoke coming from an inferno can cause several problems with your structural components and possessions.

How does smoke behave inside my house?

    •    Temperature of Smoke- How hot the smoke coming from the fire has a lot to do with how it behaves. Convection is the process of heat being transferred through air movement. Hot air always rises because it is not as dense as cooler air. As the warm air moves up, cooler air moves down closer to the flames that then heats up and rises. These types of air movements are called convection currents.
    •    Temperature of Surrounding Surfaces- Smoke that is hotter than the air around it tends to head towards cooler surfaces in your house such as your upper walls and ceilings. Due to convection as the warm air rises, it will push cooler air surrounding surfaces down and replace it with the hot, smoky air that can then negatively affect your wall or ceiling surfaces.

Knowing how smoke behaves in a structure can help us mitigate any issues caused by the blaze. For professional assistance after a fire, call SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500.

SERVPRO services cover a variety of needs beyond disaster mitigation, such as:

  • Structural and contents restoration for business applications
  • Improving indoor air quality after mold remediation.
  • Removing microbial growth with EPA-registered, OSHA-approved biocide solutions.
  • Maintaining detailed records of property damage, including photos, videos, and written documentation.
  • Reinstalling materials like carpet and baseboards.
  • Implementing new components like drywall and floorboards to replace unsalvageable parts of a disaster-affected space.

Restoration aims not just to clean your property, but also to achieve a high standard of preloss cleanliness that allows local business owners to return to their duties more quickly. This process requires multiple thorough inspections both during and after cleaning to ensure that your needs are met.

How Do SERVPRO Standards Set Them Apart?

Maintaining Restoration Industry Standards

The IICRC maintains detailed guidelines for a variety of restoration industry standards that are readily available for reading. SERVPRO technicians stay up-to-date on cleanup standards to aid business owners in attaining a high standard of cleanliness.

This industry-specific body compiles sanitation standards for a variety of applications, such as:

  • Biohazard cleanup and restoration.
  • Mold remediation.
  • Infection control standards for commercial applications
  • Fire and smoke damage.
  • Professional cleaning guidelines for many materials, from stone to upholstery to subfloors and substrates.

The Difference Between Restoration and Custodial Businesses

While a typical custodial service offers high-quality cleaning for businesses, SERVPRO is prepared to render this service, among many other tasks, to reach a specific standard of sanitation and preloss functionality in your Kent business. Commercial mitigation also only needs to be done sparingly, compared to the everyday tasks managed by a custodial company.

Exclusive Sanitation Programs

SERVPRO also offers the exclusive Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned program, which is aimed at sanitizing commercial spaces to prevent the spread of microbes and viruses.

  • Hospital-grade cleaners effectively sanitize frequent touchpoints on your property.
  • SERVPRO has worked since the 1960s to uphold contemporary standards in biohazard cleaning.
  • This team has access to over 100 proprietary SERVPRO cleaning solutions designed for a variety of sanitation applications.

As businesses prepare to maintain a new normal, SERVPRO strives to meet this need with helpful consultation services, comprehensive cleanup, and certification badges that mark your dedication to preserving public health.

How Can SERVPRO Technicians Dry My Business?

Structural drying is another crucial component of the sanitation process that applies to a broad spectrum of disasters that can affect a business.

  • Structural drying removes moist conditions that allow mold and microbes to thrive
  • Air movement and dehumidification tools are more useful for water damage cleanup when implemented after thorough moisture extraction.
  • Drying equipment also removes water saturation from buildings affected by fire suppression efforts, which is a must for minimizing the effects of acidic soot deposits on structures and contents.

Moisture buildup can quickly become the catalyst for a variety of disasters in the workplace. SERVPRO technicians are trained to render efficient moisture removal services that prevent the spread of microbes, soot deposits, mold spores, and other items that can potentially disrupt day-to-day business operations.

SERVPRO can deploy a variety of dehumidification tools for moisture removal, including:

  • Refrigerant coil dehumidifiers
  • Desiccant dehumidifiers
  • Low-grain refrigerant dehumidifiers.

The process for moisture extraction is slightly different, but the essential process remains the same. Moist air pulled off of surfaces by air movers is passed over the dehumidifying agent, which creates condensation or otherwise isolates moisture from the air so that it can be collected and removed from your property

SERVPRO of Kent supports local businesses with service that is Faster to Any Size Disaster. You can call (253) 850-1500 for 24/7 emergency service that returns your business to a preloss condition.

Enlist the Help of Commercial Water Restoration Companies Like SERVPRO as soon as Visible Signs of Damage Appear on your Premises.

What is the difference between residential and commercial restoration? A commercial restoration project typically requires more human resources and larger equipment than in residential properties. There may also be more specialized requirements when dealing with business premises in Kent. A launderette with leaking appliances, for example, may require an out-of-hours service to avoid restoration impacting their revenues. On the other hand, residents may want recovery to occur during the working day to minimize the impact on their daily lives. You can communicate directly with SERVPRO crew chiefs to minimize inconvenience to your business.

Can Faulty Appliances Damage my Business?

Water intrusion can negatively affect both the structure and contents of your business premises. It is wise to use commercial water restoration companies in Kent to prevent a minor issue from causing significant damage. Faulty appliances can release water into your premises in several ways from the direct access to internal plumbing and the unit itself. Our crew chiefs maintain close relationships with technical specialists like electricians and electrical repair companies. When working on your business, we can enlist the help of these third parties on your behalf, so you only must deal with one the point of contact throughout.

What steps should I take with a faulty washing machine?

  • Isolate the cause of the problem
  • Remove the appliance from use
  • Bring in professional restorers to reverse any damages

How do restorers reverse water damage?

The process of returning a business to a preloss condition involves careful planning and efficient execution. Using extraction and air-moving equipment, we speed up the natural drying time. Afterward, we can address any existing water damage using industrial cleaning solutions and solvents. Our final stage is to deodorize the property using box fans to clear away any residual odors.

If a faulty appliance is affecting your business, contact SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 for a tailored solution.

A Coordinated Team of Well-Trained and Equipped Workers Is Why SERVPRO Preserves Your Kent Home from Secondary Damage

When a pipe leaks or the dishwasher overflows, it seems as though an afternoon, some focus, and a little hard work should be enough to banish the suds, fluids, and nuisance from your life. Unfortunately, water damage in Kent does not work quite that way. Structures rarely are watertight, so there is a significant chance that a percentage of the leaked or spilled water migrates into cracks and crevices or soaks into permeable structural components like drywall and subfloors.

What Happens When Water Migrates?

Water damage in your Kent home can spread widely without you realizing. The moisture saturating building materials and contents is not benign. If not found and removed within hours or days, it can cause progressive damage, including mold growth, that exposes your home and possibly your health to unacceptable risks. Secondary damage manifests as the following, among other issues:

    •    Swollen wood framing, joists, studs
    •    Oxidized (rusted) metal fasteners and supports
    •    Distorted milled wood products like doors, windows, and their frames
    •    Warped sub-floors and hardwood strip or planks
    •    Bulging or cracked drywall and lath and plaster
    •    Stained and ill-fitting ceiling tiles
    •    Blistered paint and peeling wallpaper

Can This Damage Be Fixed?

If caught soon enough, some of the material prone to secondary damage can recover, although at higher cost and level of disruption than if the water was managed appropriately at the onset. This is why SERVPRO’s approach is fundamental to the best outcomes. We arrive quickly and trace the pathways water took after the original crisis with moisture detectors and meters. Finding and releasing the water, followed by effective structural drying, brings your home back to preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Kent can help keep minor leaks and spills from significantly damaging your home. Give us a call at (253) 850-1500 for advice on how we can help address water damage in your home.

SERVPRO Contents Processing Provides Specialized Cleaning and Drying Strategies for Delicate and Intricately Detailed Possessions Damaged by a Kent Residential Fire

You give the decorative and practical items collected or bequeathed to you a place of pride in your Kent home. Rather than packing them away, they are enjoyed and used. Unfortunately, this decision to celebrate these articles puts them in the path of the corrosive residues created during a residential fire.

Does Soot Ruin Decorative Metals and Vintage Chinas?

As with many questions concerning fire damage in your Kent home, the most honest answer admits that successful restoration depends on many factors. Open, honest communication about the prognosis for your precious items is crucial. As the cleaning and remediation proceed, regular updates demonstrate our commitment to compassion with integrity at a difficult time. Factors that affect restoration outcomes include:

- The amount of time passed before we assessed the item

- Pre-existing damage or previous repairs to an article

- Exposure to heat during the fire, and how quickly firefighting activity cooled the items

- Characteristics of the soot -- dry, wet, or protein-based

Why Should I Seek Professional Help When I Am Motivated to Save My Property?

Although SERVPRO often shares responsibility with our customers during fire clean up, the delicacy of vintage crystal, china, and metalwork demands highly-skilled and experienced assessment and follow through. The stress of the high heat of a fire can exacerbate these weaknesses if the items already had chips and cracks. Metals swiftly tarnish when exposed to fire residues, and precisely matched cleaning products are vital to prevent that oxidation from degenerating to pitting and etching.

What We Can Do?

Delicate, hard artifacts can be packed-out to our facility for ultra-sonic immersion cleaning. Millions of tiny bubbles can remove soot and dirt gently and safely. The Esporta washing system can be used for soft fabrics, and even your child's teddy bear.

Our dedicated production facility technicians at SERVPRO of Kent rise to the challenge when unique items suffer damage. We base our interventions on industry best practices and seek input from you and your insurer every step of the way. Call us at (253) 850-1500 as soon as possible for desired outcomes.

What Hazards are in My Home After Flood Damage

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

Worker Collecting Water In Bucket From Ceiling While Woman Talking On Mobile Phone Call SERVPRO at the first signs of flood damage entering your home.

Hazards in Your Kent Home After Flooding

When water enters your home from a structural breach or through natural flooding scenarios, it can be a hazardous situation for your Kent residence. Knowing these risks and what to do about them can be enough to protect those that matter most and help to protect some of your belongings and possessions in the earliest stages of flood losses as well.

Many of the hazards that can exist after flood damage in Kent homes are universal to any disaster, whether natural flooding or roof/property damage is to blame for the intruding water. Our SERVPRO professionals are often not the first individuals in a damaged home after a flood loss situation, so understanding these hazards before entering the property can keep you safe until our qualified technicians arrive to begin mitigation work.

Structural Concerns

One of the most pressing concerns for those inspecting the damage to their house is oversaturated materials like ceiling assemblies. Sagging materials are often a strong indication of overweight drywall and insulation that can collapse and injure those underneath it. Wall systems are also at risk for becoming oversaturated beyond the capabilities of drywall screws in studs. These are the areas where our team can perform controlled demolition to help with the drying process and protect other materials nearby.

Electrical Shock Hazards

When standing water reaches outlets near the floor of your home, or electrically charged equipment still powered on, it can cause the pooling water in the area to become electrified. Unless you can be confident that no hazard exists, such as the power getting severed to the structure, do not enter standing water.

Contamination Concerns

Natural flooding presents a real risk of contamination to materials, contents, and occupants. We have disinfection products and cleaning practices that remove these bacterial threats from structural framework remaining installed before full-scale build back begins.

We understand the urgency that you feel when your home gets flooded, but keeping yourself and your family safe should be your priority. Our SERVPRO of Kent team is standing by whenever you need us to help at (253) 850-1500.

How You Can Restore Your Fire Damaged West Kent Home Quickly

The thought of a fire destroying your Kent home is unpleasant. You have worked hard to buy it and the possessions in it. In the event of a fire, many of your belongings can get destroyed within minutes. When fires occur, they cause expensive destruction and disrupt the life of the homeowner.

When your Kent home has fire damage, avoid starting the restoration process without a good plan in place. You may find that the expertise required to restore your home is a little beyond what you can perform effectively. There are several steps you can take to secure your house after a fire. However, hiring a fire restoration company like SERVPRO to do the bulk of the work is advisable. Before the professionals arrive, consider taking the following steps to ensure your safety:

  • Shut off electricity and gas at the source. A spark can ignite leaking gas and cause the fire to reignite.
  • Throw away all the items that are beyond repair.
  • If possible, remove insulation from affected walls and discard it.
  • Determine which areas can be traversed safely while avoiding walls and floors that display signs of instability or weakness.
  • Smoke comprises carbon particles, and the smoke scent can persist if the particles remain in your home. Open doors and windows to let air circulate throughout your home. Even though this may seem to be a small thing, it helps remove the smoke odor.

As a fire restoration service, SERVPRO has the training, knowledge, equipment, and experience to handle all the aspects of cleaning up your fire-damaged residence. Our restoration process can minimize further destruction to your home and salvage some items. We can restore both your home and salvageable items to their preloss state. Saving time is vital following fire damage to prevent long-term destruction.

We offer a wide array of services based on the extent of the destruction. Our Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians (FSRTs) can remove smoke residues from all surfaces of your home.  We can remove smoke residues from the surfaces of these appliances through polishing and wet cleaning.

If there are fire residues on upholstery and carpets, our restores can use carpet and upholstery shampoos to remove them. These are blends of solvents, detergents, and cleaning agents that can brighten all fabrics. A solution of water and these shampoos has a neutral pH and works well on nylon, cotton, wool, and other artificial fibers. Once your home is clean, we can take more steps to remove odors using various deodorizing products like water-based odor counteractants, water-based wet mist deodorizers, sealers, and deodorant granules or pellets. We can also offer rebuilding services if necessary, enabling you to save money and time.

It takes specialized training and expertise to restore a home that has survived a fire. SERVPRO of Kent has the skills it takes. Call us today at (253) 850-1500 for prompt restoration.

Overcoming Challenges After A Water Damage Disaster In Your Kent Home

Challenges To Overcome When Finalizing Restoration Of Water Damage In Your Kent Home

After cleaning up and drying your property after a water loss incident comes the final steps of restoring the home to its preloss state. Although the worst of the incident may be over, you might still face some challenges. Luckily, professional water damage restorers in Kent are adept with every stage of the process, including finalizing the restoration.

The Refitting Challenge

In many cases, water damage in your Kent home is likely to have a significant impact on the floor materials since it is where the water collects. Restoration might involve the removal of the floor materials and other forms of tear down. For instance, in a carpeted area, removing the carpet for drying and disposing of the pad might be necessary. The finalization stage, therefore, involves reinstalling the materials. Our SERVPRO technicians handle the reinstallation, seaming, and installation of the tack strip for a snug fit. We also ensure no damage happens to parts of the structure, such as walls during reinstallation.

Physically Altered Materials

Water damage might change some materials physically. For example, wooden floorboards might swell after absorbing high amounts of water. If the boards are removed during the restoration to access the subfloors, reinstalling them is part of the final stage. Our SERVPRO technicians dry the boards to their usual moisture content, which is around 4% eliminating any swelling. We also sand out minor alterations such as cupping ensuring that the boards fit well.

Dealing with the Odor

If considerable time passes before completing the restoration, bad odors can develop. Odors can also develop depending on the elements the water dissolves. It is crucial to deodorize such odors when finalizing the restoration. Our SERVPRO technicians can fog a deodorizing agent into the general area. Fogging using specialized equipment such as ULV foggers atomizes the deodorizer allowing deep penetration into materials where it can neutralize odor particles. We also utilize other procedures, including masking temporary odors with sweet scents.

With proper management, restoring water damage should not be too difficult. Call SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 to help. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

When your home is underwater, you need solutions fast! Rather than waste time trying to fix the leak and extract water by yourself, it is best to reach out to a professional team of water restoration technicians. The dangers of leaving excess humidity in your home are real, and they could pose a threat to your health and that of your friends and family.

Luckily, Kent homeowners requiring water cleanup services can call our 24/7 hotline for prompt assistance. Our industry knowledge and experience prepares us to handle the emergency at hand while anticipating and thwarting any future complications.

Why is SERVPRO my best option for water cleanup?

Our credentials speak for themselves, as does our work experience. Our team of technicians holds certifications by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), which is the certifying entity for our industry. As we go about your property and assess the damage, we identify the areas we can utilize to isolate those items still in good repair. By using separation barriers, we can prevent cross-contamination and further damage. For the actual extraction of water in your home, our SERVPRO crew relies on a combination of equipment and techniques to achieve success. In our business, we strive to mitigate your losses, but we do not rush at the expense of your personal belongings. In developing a plan, we consider the following among others:

  • Is there water hiding under your cabinets or within your walls? If so, we can use a wand extractor to access it.
  • Do you have hardwood floors, and are they buckling? The humidity in your wooden floors will guide us as we carefully dry them to avoid damage.
  • Are your valuable documents wet? If so, we can apply freeze-drying techniques to preserve them.

Whatever your needs are, SERVPRO of Kent is here to help. Call us at (253) 850-1500 and let us leave your home, "Like it never even happened."

Tips for Recovery after a Flood Damages Your Kent Residence

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

kids play on the table while flooding in the kitchen Let us guide you through the right steps before a flood takes over your Kent home.

SERVPRO cares about its Kent community, especially after a flood.

Flooding can affect many homes in Kent because of increased rain and the resulting overflow from streams and rivers. Flood damage is expensive, destructive, and can have long-term repercussions for the value of your house. After severe weather, you may have to deal with many issues, including water damage from rain and structural destruction from flying debris or strong winds.

When your residence in Kent has flood damage, you can do several things to begin the recovery process. One thing you should do is call your insurance agent if you have flood insurance. The agent can start the claims process and schedule an appointment for an insurance adjuster to visit your home. Be ready to request a partial or advance payment if needed.

You should also document the flood damage both inside and outside your home. Take many photos or videos and ensure you get detailed, close-up shots of the ruined items before removing them from your house. If the flooding destroys larger items such as flooring or carpeting, cut out small pieces and set them aside to show the adjuster. Claims adjusters usually note the direct flood damage and based on their assessment, and they provide the insured with a suggested proof of loss.

Ventilating your home after a flood is also vital. Open the windows, doors, drawers, and cabinets to ensure adequate airflow. If there is an immediate step you can take to protect your home from further damage like boarding up a window or laying a tarp, do so. You also need to start the water extraction process quickly. When a home is flooded, severe structural destruction can occur as the surrounding building materials like drywall absorb the water and weaken.

Floodwater also brings health hazards into a house as it may contain harmful microorganisms and cause mold to grow. To avoid the potential risks of coming into contact with floodwater, it is better to let SERVPRO handle the restoration process. We have portable and truck-mounted pumps that can remove standing water from your home effectively to speed up drying. Once we remove the standing water, we bring in air movers and dehumidifiers to dry out the moisture in the walls, floors, and furnishings. Drying your home thoroughly can help you avoid costly damage. To determine if a building is dry, we use moisture detection devices like:

  • Moisture meters
  • Moisture sensors
  • Infrared cameras
  • Thermo-hygrometers

Our SERVPRO crew also sanitizes the furnishings and surfaces that the floodwater touched. We use microbial detection tools to identify areas that have high concentrations of microorganisms and target them with sanitizing measures. We begin sanitizing the areas with the highest level of microbes using antimicrobial products and high-powered UV ray projectors, which can sanitize a building without using chemicals.

When flood water has entered your property, call SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 for quick restoration. We can deal with the aftermath of the flooding incident to make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Our proprietary cleaning and restoration processes help eliminate odors while allowing us to salvage or restore your belongings safely and efficiently.

With a fire loss event that leaves behind a considerable amount of soot and smoke, SERVPRO technicians combine multiple techniques. Can I Try to Clean Up the Water Myself?

Most homeowners have a mop and bucket or a decent wet/dry vacuum handy within their homes. However, these tools are not able to measure up to the industrial-strength equipment and training that skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) bring to the job site. Our team is fully trained through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). We work to ensure we meet or exceed all of the expectations for water cleanup in Kent so that your home is restored to make it “Like it never even happened.”

What Happens During Water Damage Restoration?

Water migration is a critical concern that our team has once we arrive on the scene. We must spring into action as quickly as possible to keep water from moving into other areas of the home. Our technicians wear removable shoe covers while we work through each area of the home to limit damage from spreading. Moisture detection tools that do not penetrate materials are also available to the team that allows us to take moisture readings without causing further damage.

How Fast Will the Water Removal Process Be?

SERVPRO technicians follow distinct steps to expedite the water damage restoration process, including:

    •    Assessment
    •    Movement of Contents
    •    Water Removal
    •    Moisture Control
    •    Water Detection

After we assess the site of the loss, our team formulates a plan involving the best equipment and techniques to get the job done. Just a sampling of the equipment that our vehicles are equipped with to address water restoration projects in Kent include:

    •    Water Extraction Tools: We have truck-mounted extractors that allow us to remove hundreds to thousands of gallons of water in a short span. Submersible pumps are also available to facilitate targeted water removal.
    •    Air Movers: Industrial fans and high-speed air movers help improve airflow over the flooring, carpets furnishings, and walls to make moisture evaporation go faster.
    •    Dehumidifiers: Dehumidification is critical with any water cleanup project. Our technicians have industrial-grade dehumidifiers that lower humidity levels within the home. This equipment removes damp air from the space and prevents secondary water damage like swelling or warping of walls, flooring, and furniture.
    •    Moisture Detectors: No moisture must be left behind, so our team has access to a range of moisture detection tools. Moisture meters, moisture sensors, and thermal imaging cameras help us to located hidden moisture pockets in cracks and crevices. Failing to find leftover moisture zones can cause hidden damage due to harmful mold and mildew growth.

Why is Water Migration Something to Worry About?
All standing water within the loss zone must be entirely removed before the drying process begins. If there is any moisture left behind in the walls or behind baseboards, it can destroy the building materials or turn into a breeding ground for bacteria and microbes. In a situation where moisture lurks behind walls, our technicians may need to drill holes in the walls to bring warm air in, which facilitates better drying.

SERVPRO is Here for Effective Water Restoration When You Need It

When we are called for water cleanup, there is more to the job than taking care of visible water. Moisture migrates to dry spaces, which means that your carpets and padding, floors and subfloors, drywall and studs are all prone to damage. Even if it seems as though your floor may be dry after extraction, there could still be hidden moisture found in the subfloor below. This is why we have professional equipment allowing us to detect and measure the moisture levels throughout your home.

Explaining the Need for Partial Demolition During Kent Water Removal

SERVPRO Teams Make The Necessary Changes To Avoid Further Loss Of Your Property

A water loss in your Kent home already creates chaos, so understandably homeowners are concerned when restoration technicians recommend strategies involving removing or altering structural components. Clear communication with our customers about the need for controlled demolition is vital. Our full-service restoration company streamlines not only the water extraction and structural drying but also any repairs or rebuilding needed afterward.

Water Migrates

After a plumbing leak, tub overflow, or appliance mishap, fast water removal in your Kent home avoids further deterioration of building materials and secondary harm like mold growth. Water does not remain static once it escapes from a pipe, hose, or container. It flows, seeps, and percolates into building cavities and materials and is absorbed by porous ones.

Detection Leads to Carefully Planned Demolition

SERVPRO technicians master training in the use of moisture meters and detectors, following the path of the water. We also use thermal imaging, employing expert reading of temperature fluctuations, to locate pooled water. Often the liquid and absorbed water are entirely encapsulated by walls, woodwork, and flooring. Leaving it to drain or dry out over time is not best practice. If we do not follow its path and make arrangements to extract liquids and dry out wet structural components, expect a continuous weakening of materials, lingering odors, and great expense to remedy the situation. To remove the water, we try a range of strategies:

  • Removal of baseboards to cut holes near the bottom of wall cavities
  • Flood cuts, made several inches above the waterline when drywall is saturated
  • Loosening of paneling or strips of hardwood flooring
  • Drilled holes in masonry mortar joints

Next Steps

These remedies facilitate the release of liquids and permit the infusion of warm, dry air. SERVPRO technicians use a system that can switch between negative air pressure to suction out water and positive air pressure to force warm, dry air into cavities through the smaller holes to accelerate evaporation. Larger openings, like the flood cuts, permit us to position air movers and dehumidifiers closer, encouraging evaporation and then capture of the water vapor. Floors respond to suction-driven mats or airflow under planks for thorough drying.

Streamlined Rebuilding

Our reconstruction division lightens the load on SERVPRO customers. Rather than hiring another contractor to address the holes and sawn-off drywall, our contractor’s license permits employees to repair, reinstall, and rebuild.

Engage SERVPRO of Kent for wrap-around restoration and rehabbing services beginning with water removal. Call us at (253) 850-1500 to schedule an assessment.

Why Kent Homeowners Should Get Professional Mold Remediation

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

Mold We know more than just the basics when it comes to Mold damage in Kent.

We Take Mold Damage Very Seriously In Your Kent Home

A typical action many homeowners do first when they have mold damage is to Google it for home remedies. This tactic works great for the mold infestation but not so great for the home and contents, as it allows the colonies to continue to thrive and spread.

Professional mold remediation in Kent homes should begin as soon as signs of an infestation get noticed. Musty odors, visible mold, and signs of water damage all point to colonies growing behind the scenes.

Why SERVPRO?

The certified technicians undergo extensive training in water, fire, biohazard, and mold restoration. Their goal is always to save homeowners from the cost of replacement for both the structure and contents through their advanced cleaning methods.

Locating the Reason for Mold

There are numerous reasons mold occurs within properties, until the conditions enabling the colonies gets handled, the problem has the potential to return. The techs carefully scope and look for the root cause; typical scenarios include inadequate ventilation, previous flood or water damage, and leaks.

Careful Abatement and Controlled Demolition

When sheetrock and other building materials receive the effects of mold, it often requires removal and disposal. During the abatement of colonies, the techs usually contain the area to stop the spread of any airborne spores. After drying existing colonies, the remaining debris on wood beams gets removed either through gentle hand-scraping or through the use of applications such as soda blasting.

Post-Remediation Actions

The techs use specially formulated cleaning agents to kill any spores resident on surfaces. The application of an antimicrobial sealant gets used on the framework before the reinstallation of sheetrock to inhibit the return of mold.

Repairs and Restoration

During mold damage mitigation, it is common for properties to need sheetrock replaced, cabinets installed, and flooring replaced. With their general contractor license #SERVPCS911LE, the techs offer a full transitional service from restoration to reconstruction as needed to bring the home to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 has the tools and equipment to provide professional mold remediation services to local homeowners and make the loss to their homes, "Like it never even happened."

Mitigating Commercial Water Damage in Kent with Heat, Air Flow, and Desiccation Helps Your Retail Shop Reopen Faster

When something gets damp, drying out happens slowly because the water takes time to evaporate into the air. The environment can change how rapidly this takes place. SERVPRO’s technicians use their extensive training to alter your Kent business’ interior environment.

Changing the temperature, increasing air currents, and removing water vapor affect the rate of evaporation, allowing us to mitigate and protect your Kent Shop from commercial water damage. Each aspect of this requires different machines, and sometimes, temporary containment measures or removal of materials destroyed by the initial influx of water.

Because different types of materials absorb and retain water differently, we often sort these for our commercial customers. Our building crew takes little time in constructing drying chambers for those items that require more aggressive measures. Some items need extremely gentle care, while others need stripped of plastic packaging to release trapped moisture.

Exposure to water damages other inventory stock so extensively that we provide an accurate inventory listing the items, allowing you to file a claim and quickly replace such items. For those items that might pose more difficulty for you to replace, we can discuss additional measures that might help restore them. However, we always explain how additional work might add to your recovery costs.

One area of any building that sustains some of the severest water damage is the flooring. Along with the equipment used to control the drying inside the many chambers we build and use, our Green Fleet holds enough to get your floors dry, as well. Our building crew can make repairs to wood and tile flooring and also take care of carpeting. Heat increases the rate at which moisture escapes from underneath flooring, ensuring it dies evenly.

Addressing wet carpeting immediately after an intrusion of water gives us time to get it dry, either by floating it or performing intensive carpet cleaning. Waiting, even a day or two, can lead to microbial growth and disintegration of the carpet backing. At this point, replacement of both pad and carpet needs to occur.

SERVPRO of Kent can help your business in Tukwila, Maple Valley, and near Henrys recover after water damage causes problems. Call us at (253) 850-1500 to receive fast and professional service by trained and IICRC-certified experts, 24/7.

Proven Tips to Flood Damage Remediation Success in Kent

Common Issues With Flood Damage Cleanup in Kent Basements

Flood damage has the potential to occur in nearly any room in a home. Basements and crawlspaces are particularly susceptible to this type of water loss.

The cleanup of flood damage in a Kent basement is more than just mopping up water and turning on fans to dry the premises. SERVPRO technicians are restoring as they clean to ensure the least amount of loss for the structure and contents.

Water Removal Issues

Elements such as silt, debris, solid waste, and mud commonly appear with floodwater. The techs need to use hand tools such as rakes and shovels to get rid of the solids in the water to expose the substrate of the basement floor for further scoping and mitigation. When there is a large amount of debris mixed in the water over a full scale in the home, the techs rely on trash pumps to pull out the water and solids quickly. In cases where the water in the basement is higher than two inches in depth, submersible pumps get deployed for removal efforts.

Treatment of Contaminated Water

For safety reasons, the SERVPRO techs use personal protection gear while cleaning up floodwater, including respirators. It is a common practice to treat the water they are working on with a disinfectant before removal to increase the protection from resident biological agents.

Special Considerations for Basements

The technicians are extra careful during the mitigation of flood loss to a basement. When prolonged exposure to water occurs, the removal of the water inside the basement when the soil outside the basement walls has high saturation levels can lead to a collapse of the interior walls due to hydrostatic pressure. This attention to detail is why the techs survey both the interior and exterior of the home to ensure it is safe to go forward with water removal and drying of the property.

Significant Repairs Do Not Have to Be Stressful

When the exterior or interior of a basement has flood loss, the controlled demo actions to save as much of the structure as possible may be many. The cut-out sheetrock, repairs to the exterior, including painting and installation of flooring as needed. With their general contractor license #SERVPCS911LE, the techs can offer this service to homeowners to return their homes to preloss condition.

When flood damage is the problem in your home, call SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500. The emergency response teams are available 24/7 to make the water loss to the property, "Like it never even happened."

Smoke and Fire Damage Should Always Have Professional Cleanup in Kent Homes

2/15/2020 (Permalink)

Fire We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO Understands How Important The Details Are When it Comes to Your Homes Fire Damage and Restoration

The methods of cleaning fire damage from a house make the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy environment. Due to soot being an irritant to the majority of people, getting it out of the home before it can spread is a priority.

A standard step SERVPRO technicians take upon arrival to a Kent home for fire damage restoration is containment. There are different methods, but one of the most common is also the most simplistic: the putting up of heavy plastic sheeting over doorways and vents. Additionally, the techs often run air scrubbers during the entire mitigation process to capture airborne soot particles and port them off-site.

Why Testing of Residues is Vital

The cleaning away for smoke is not a one-size-fits-all process for SERVPRO technicians. In fact, the use of an incorrect method can result in more significant damage to a surface. That is why before the techs take any actions regarding smoke damage on surfaces, they test the residues to determine if they fall into the wet or dry smoke category.  This attention to detail ensures the use of the appropriate cleaning agents.

What Harm Can DIY Smoke Damage Cleaning Efforts Do?

When property owners spent time attempting to clean up the aftermath of a property fire themselves, not only is this unhealthy, it can result in a broader scope of fire loss throughout the home due to the spread of soot, mainly through the ductwork in the house resulting in a residual odor any time the HVAC gets used until the ductwork gets cleaned. Also, using wet cleaners on dry smoke can drive the soot deeply into the surface and render the object unrestorable.

Most importantly, if an item receives more damage due to cleaning efforts by the property owner, the insurance carrier may deem the item a loss due to the negligence in cleansing, which is why it is vital to let the technicians perform tests on residues and clean pieces to ensure the best outcome after a fire loss.

At the first sign of fire damage in your SERVPRO of Kent residence, call (253) 850-1500. The certified, experienced technicians are ready to assist local properties 24/7 for the restoration of any type of fire loss and make it "Like it never even happened."

Become Familiar With Effective Water Damage Remediation in Kent

water damaged ceiling Don't ignore spots or bubbles in the paint on your ceiling. That could be water damage. Contact SERVPRO to assess and remediate any damage.

Extracting Water Damage From a Kent Residence

Did you know that 37% of homeowners claim to have suffered losses from water damage? Each year, millions of people are affected by water-related disasters. Even small pipe leaks can quietly pour hundreds of gallons of water into the home,  compromising structural materials and creating environments that host mold and other microbes.

If your Kent residence needs water damage mitigation fast, the IICRC-certified technicians at SERVPRO are available to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This team is dedicated to bringing homeowners thorough cleaning and restoration to help them save time and money. Technicians coordinate with both property owners and insurance adjusters to ensure that every step of the cleanup process, including any necessary disposal or demolition, is done with the consent of all involved parties.

Signs of a Pipe Leak in Your Home

  • Stains on the ceiling. If you notice dark stains or sagging in your ceiling, the internal pipes may have seeped enough water through to damage beams.
  • Damaged flooring. There are several ways that water can damage flooring, including buckling, staining, cracking, warping, and loosening of tiles. If you feel persistent wet or soft spots in the floor when you step on it, chances are you have water damage that needs mitigation. Water can erode subflooring and eventually collapse structures without professional mitigation.
  • Rusty fixtures. If your pipes are discolored, stained, dimpled, or flaking, corrosion is a likely culprit. Rusty pipes, fuse boxes, and other appliances indicate water damage in or near walls.
  • Discoloration of paint or wallpaper. When exposed to water over time, paint and wallpaper start to peel, bubble, crack, and warp. Worse still, the drywall and wood behind it is absorbent and breaks down, meaning that if you see damage on the surface, there is likely even more behind the walls.
  • Odors. If you notice a musty or mildewy smell, chances are there is water damage nearby.

How SERVPRO Can Help

If you have a saggy, water-saturated ceiling, SERVPRO technicians have a variety of tools available to address the issue. Technicians can evaluate the extent of damage behind surfaces with infrared cameras. After evaluating moisture levels, technicians can demolish damaged portions of the ceiling and remove compromised materials.

Once unsafe materials have been extracted from the affected area, drying with air movers and dehumidifiers can commence. If odors persist, technicians can implement ultra-low volume foggers to dispense water- or solvent-based deodorant solutions that eliminate odor-causing particles.

Water Removal in Kent Kitchen Uncovers Big Problem

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

Puddle of water on floor Call SERVPRO day or night at (253) 850-1500.

Why SERVPRO Handles Kent Water Removal with Ease

When you have pets, and kids in the home, a random bit of water showing up on the kitchen floor does not immediately bring the term "water damage" to mind. You are probably already trying to figure out which child or pet spilled the water.

A homeowner in Kent contacted SERVPRO for water removal from her kitchen floor. The technicians quickly traced the cause of the water to a supply line break under the sink. Upon inspection, the technicians found there had been a slow leak for a while. Water ran under the cabinet and exited in front of the sink in small amounts whenever anyone used the faucet.

Why SERVPRO?

The highly trained, certified technicians not only clean up properties with a water loss, but they also have the knowledge and experience to figure out the cause and fix it, so the homeowners do not experience a repeat of the same incident.

Water Extraction and Prepping for Drying

The sheetrock under the cabinet leaked too much moisture over an extended period and required removal. SERVPRO techs removed the toe kick for both extraction and drying needs. This negated having to pull the cabinets out for during the drying phase of mitigation. While there was very little standing water, the area of the affected walls and under the cabinet showed high elevations of moisture on the detection equipment.

Drying with Precision

Once the controlled demo actions completed, SERVPRO techs set up air movers and dehumidification units to direct the airflow at the opened wall cavities and within the cabinet area and remove embedded moisture. The techs monitor the process carefully and take readings while the equipment is running to ensure the loss areas attain drying goals.

No Waiting for Repairs

With their general contractor license #SERVPCS911LE, SERVPRO offers homeowners the option to have the same team that does the cleanup also handle the rebuilding, and this makes the time to get your home back to normal even quicker.

When your home requires fast water removal, contact SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500. The certified techs are ready 24/7 to restore your home to its preloss condition, "Like it never even happened."

Kent Homeowners Choose SERVPRO as Their All-in-One Choice for Flood Damage Assistance

Watching groundwater enter your home and knowing that flood damage is happening is probably one of the worst feelings a homeowner can have. Fortunately, there is the potential to lessen loss by beginning cleanup efforts as fast as possible.

During the initial call, it is common for SERVPRO to advise the homeowner to avoid contact with the floodwater in Kent, especially to do any cleaning before the arrival of the techs on-site. The reason for this is because until the techs test the water for the existence of contaminants, bacteria, or sewage present in the water, it is unsafe for anyone who is not wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) to come into contact with it.

Removal of Items From the Flood Loss Area Before SERVPRO Arrives

Before doing any of these in your home, make sure it is safe to do so. The danger of slip and fall accidents on wet tile flooring can be a potential hazard. If you want to move items out of the flood loss area and can do so without coming into contact with the water, that can assist with lessening loss. If the water is up to the electrical outlets, do not enter these areas of the home and turn off the electricity at the panel. If there are heirlooms or valuables, you need to remove but cannot access, tell the technicians when they arrive, and they can get the items for you.

Professional Equipment Used For Fast Extraction

Getting the water out of the home is the first step towards restoration. SERVPRO technicians have access to a vast array of equipment, depending on the types of surfaces that need water removal. Portable pumps work well on most floor coverings, while specialized attachments such as weighted extractor heads and squeegees assist with carpet and hardwood or tiled floors. If the water is more than two inches in depth, submersible pumps allow the cleanup to move forward.

Controlled Demolition and Reconstruction

When water wicks into sheetrock, it must be cut away to halt any further flood damage. While this opens up the wall cavities for complete drying, it also requires repair to bring the home back to its pre-flood state. With their general contractor license #SERVPCS911LE, SERVPRO can assist homeowners with not only restoration services but any repairs and rebuilding needed.

SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 is ready 24/7 to handle any size flood damage to your home. The technicians arrive quickly and clean up the water loss, so it is "Like it never even happened."

Water Damage in Tukwila Kitchen Gets Demo and Rebuild

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

A sink turned on with water flowing out of a pipe under the sink. SERVPRO knows exactly what you are going through when it comes to saving your Tukwila kitchen from water damage.

Tukwila if you endure water damage to your kitchen, let us help save your kitchen.

When a pipe bursts under a sink in a kitchen, the amount of water that spills can do significant damage to the flooring and walls in a short time. Mops and rags only absorb water on the surface and do nothing about any migration that happened into the subfloor or behind baseboards.

SERVPRO technicians received a call to assist a Tukwila home with water damage cleanup in the kitchen. The water pooled in the breakfast area and required extraction using portable pumps.

Tracing the Water Migration Path

The techs use various types of detection equipment to determine moisture and humidity levels behind walls and under floors. This action ensures that no water gets left behind to cause additional issues.

Removal of Damaged Materials

Hardwood flooring has recovery potential through drying, if the mitigation begins quickly enough. The composite wood floor in the kitchen deteriorated quickly after extended exposure to the water. Technicians removed the flooring as it had no restoration prospects and prepped the subfloor for drying. The sheetrock wicked significant amounts of water and required removal down to the studs to open the wall cavity for better airflow.

Complete Drying is the Key

The techs monitor the drying process carefully to ensure that the indoor humidity levels fall below the range for mold spore germination, and it also assists in avoiding musty odors. Once the structure verifies as dry, they clean the surfaces with their proprietary disinfectants, so there is a clean slate to build on.

Restoration and Reconstruction

With their general contractor license #SERVPCS911LE, SERVPRO offers a one-stop recovery and rebuilding assistance. This takes the hassle out of finding a contractor and waiting for the insurance carrier to approve the services. The technicians work closely with the insurance company, so the process from beginning to end is never out of the scope of coverage. The technicians handle everything such as installing flooring, painting, and repairs as needed.

SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 can clean up water damage and restore your home with any reconstruction or repairs needed to make the loss "Like it never even happened."

Why Your Staff's Safety is Important During Commercial Water Restoration in Tukwila

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

Outside view of multi-story office building Water quickly damages commercial property. SERVPRO can quickly remove the water and restore your building.

Guarantee the Safety of your Staff when Repairing Commercial Water Damage in Tukwila

Factories can hold anywhere from a few members of staff to hundreds. As a factory manager, you need to make sure that the staff always has a safe and sanitary working environment. This commitment is why a potential water leak can cause havoc both to your target production levels as well as your staff. With a wide area to cover, seeking professional assistance to transition from a water emergency to business, as usual, is a prudent move. Our restoration services have a wealth of experience in dealing with larger commercial clients and can ensure both human resources, equipment, and the building itself.

A commercial water damage issue in your Tukwila factory should be dealt with as soon as possible. Microbial growth rates in water can see a clean water emergency degrade into grey or blackwater in as little as seventy-two-hours. SERVPRO technicians operate locally, which can reduce call-out times, and we have crew chiefs on hand to speak with you throughout service. Regular communication between technicians, managers, and staff can ease what is usually a challenging restoration.

Water damaged commercial properties may need chemical cleaning and deodorizing to make a full recovery. The building may also need dehumidifying. Any of these processes can present health risks to your staff working on-site. As a professionally accredited restorer, SERVPRO can provide you with material safety data sheets (MSDS) at the beginning and throughout service. These can help to protect both your business and your staff from harm during restoration.

Water contains microbes, which may cause odors or microbial growth issues that can be a health risk. In combating these, SERVPRO may use a variety of solvent deodorants or disinfectants. While effective at dealing with the immediate issues, solvents can remain in the air, which could pose a health risk to anyone on-site. Our technicians are experts at mixing and dispersing solvents correctly. Once complete, our powerful venting box fans can exchange the air effectively and remove any chemical residues from larger, factory sites.

Professional accreditation and practical experience are essential when handling powerful restoration chemicals in commercial environments. Contact SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500.

Cleaning Moderately Soiled Kent Homes After Fires

As destructive as fire losses can be for Kent homes, it can be even more devastating when improper cleaning practices and approaches lead to irreparable staining, smearing, and marring. Our professionals have extensive experience in the recovery of on-site construction materials and contents, even to the point of successfully restoring moderate soiling to affected surfaces without requiring any demolition or later reconstruction. Depending on the damage and the substance, we have several practices that can help.

Knowing which of these techniques fits the specific scenario and circumstance is part of the extensive training and education that our SERVPRO professionals receive to handle fire cleanup in damaged Kent homes. Once we have identified surfaces and contents that can benefit from mechanical action cleaning, we can attempt one of these practical approaches.

Cleaning Towels
As rudimentary as it might seem, wiping surfaces with a towel as part of a wet-cleaning approach can help to reduce the possibility of streaking and smearing. In situations where soils and moisture could still be present, the towel can also help to absorb substances from the surface.

Dry Cleaning Sponge
Sponges of all shapes, sizes, and compositions have a role in fire loss cleanup. Rubber sponges can get used for the removal of loose soil as it gets pulled across a surface, the friction causes soils to transfer into the pores of the sponge. While these do little to wet smoke residue, they are the premier solution for dry smoke effects.

Crumbly Cleaning
You can liken this chemical reaction to a pencil eraser absorbing the graphite pencil markings from paper. As this substance gets rubbed on a surface, it begins to absorb soils. This approach is ideal for dry smoke residues, but it might not be as effective with glossy surfaces.

Mechanical actions are often a necessary element to cleaning up after fire loss effects in your home. No matter what kind of smoke and soot damage exists in the house, we have ideal cleaning tactics to make these losses “Like it never even happened.” Give our SERVPRO of Kent team a call anytime that you need us at (253) 850-1500.

Two Approaches for Drying Wood Frame Wall Cavities in Kent Homes

Structural cavities can be a vital component to Kent home construction because it allows for a sightless distribution of utilities like the water lines heading to fixtures throughout the residence. When plumbing breaks or leaks occur in this cavity between rooms or floors of your house, responding to the problem immediately is critical. While homeowners can respond fast with shutting off the water supply to the damaged pipe, our SERVPRO professionals have effective strategies for drying out moist structural cavities.

Choosing the best approach for drying out damaged cavities and beginning water removal in Kent homes is a product of thorough inspections and scoping of the work to get done. With sophisticated moisture detection tools, we can visualize the spread of dampness, even before we remove the drywall and other saturated materials. This knowledge can help our professionals to determine the best potential approach to drying out the affected space in one of two typical approaches.

Positive Pressure Systems

When standing water is not believed to be a threat that our technicians should expect in the damaged cavity, positive pressure approaches can be useful. These systems involve removing the baseboard from the wall surface and drill holes through the drywall to the cavity. Hoses from the machine get inserted at regular intervals into these pre-drilled holes. When the hoses get installed, the unit can get turned on to begin forcing direct heated air into this cavity to expedite drying.

Flood Cuts

Flood cutting involves removing a water damaged portion of drywall up to an established dryline. Our team can use moisture detection tools to deduce where saturation stops to remove all of the damp sheetrock beneath this labeled line. With controlled demolition complete, our SERVPRO team can bring in low-profile centrifugal air movers for the vaporization of moisture and refrigerant dehumidifiers to collect this moisture in the air.

No matter which solution that your property needs, you have a team of dedicated professionals that can help. Our SERVPRO of Kent water restoration specialists have the tools and expertise to make losses “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at (253) 850-1500.

Avoid Delays When Dealing With Flooding in Kent

Quick Flood Removal Actions Make Kent Home Habitable Again

The comfort you enjoy in your home can be curtailed instantly when a flooding incident happens. For a homeowner in Kent, removal of murky water and moisture management were the main concerns since the flooding incident also involved a torn roof leaving a significant portion of the house, including the ceiling and walls wet. Essential steps towards achieving the desired goal were:

  • Protecting contents from damages
  • Removing wet materials
  • Removing stagnant water
  • Cleaning soiling and removing contamination

Calling SERVPRO to offer professional assistance in flood removal helped the Kent homeowner in many ways to restore preloss conditions ensuring a comfortable stay. Our team brought a wealth of knowledge, including how to resolve the situation faster and what goals were necessary to achieve. For example, we had to ensure moisture content in wood items around the house was down to approximately 7%-11% and the relative humidity inside the house around 30% to 60%, depending on the temperature levels. Removal or prevention of bad odor is also necessary.

Various steps are usually necessary to achieve these goals. Removing any standing water and wet materials from the structure was necessary to help in moisture management. To reach wet materials such as drywall and insulation within the walls, our SERVPRO team started by making flood cuts. The cut is made a few inches above the waterline, simplifying the process of removing wet wall panels without tearing down the entire wall. It also creates better room for using water extractors and pumps for water removal.

Other moisture control steps are necessary even after removing wet unsalvageable materials and extracting standing water from the building. Bad odors and other severe issues such as mold can develop in the building due to high levels of moisture. Apart from using antimicrobial cleaning agents, our SERVPRO technicians also take elaborate steps to dry excess moisture. For example, venting air movers into wall spaces helped remove excess moisture from the cavities. We also set up a couple of dehumidifiers in different sections of the home, expediting drying.

With the proper response, flooding incidents are easier to manage. Call SERVPRO of Kent at (253) 850-1500 to assist. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Get 24/7 Service When Your Kent Home Suffers Water Damage

In the continental United States, water damage claims are second only to wind and hail when it comes to insurance claim filings. While wind and hail can cause visible damages to exteriors that require mitigation, water damage can compromise structures without thorough professional care.

If your Kent residence has experienced water damage due to a pipe leak or other disaster, SERVPRO technicians are ready to assist you. This IICRC-certified crew is available 24/7 to combat water-related disasters and restore homes to their preloss condition. If your living space requires renovations after a disaster, SERVPRO possesses a general contracting license (#SERVPCS911LE) and can address your needs quickly.

What to Do When You Spot Water Damage

If you have identified water damage in your home, consider these preventive measures that can minimize repair and renovation costs after a disaster:

  • Shut off water for the affected area.

  • Do not use electronics in a water-damaged area, and shut off power for these parts of your home to minimize risk.

  • Use towels, mops, and other clean items to soak up loose water.

  • Use fans and maximize ventilation to facilitate drying as much as possible.

  • Call a professional disaster mitigation team immediately to restore your home and address potential damage behind or underneath walls, ceilings, and floors.

SERVPRO's Scientific Approach

SERVPRO uses a variety of moisture measurement tools to address various materials and plot out a course of action for extraction, drying, and disinfection with EPA-registered cleaners. These tools vary from moisture sensors that evaluate the moisture levels of soft materials, to penetrating and non-penetrating moisture meters to monitor layers of material during the drying process. Technicians also use thermo-hygrometers, which evaluate both temperature and humidity.

The goal during drying is to restore your structures and possessions to moisture levels that would be normal for them. What could be considered "dry" for carpeting or drywall is not necessarily the same as it would be for hardwood floors or leather upholstery. Technicians use a thorough approach to moisture analysis during cleanup. This process includes testing the same spots on surfaces several times with a broad array of measurement tools to ensure accuracy.

SERVPRO of Kent is always available to ensure that your home looks, "Like it never even happened." Call (253) 850-1500 today if you need a disaster mitigation crew fast.

SERVPRO of Kent was fortunate enough to be invited to join Puget Sound Fire during one of their community outreach projects.

Their goal was to facilitate interaction between children and emergency responders to build trust and raise their level of comfort. They do this by opening up the fire station and inviting children and their families.

SERVPRO of Kent donated over 200 teddy bears for the children to keep. The children would bring the bears to a fire fighter and watch as they checked their vitals; listened to their heartbeat, checked their pulse, etc.

It was a fun day for everyone involved, especially the kids.

We had the opportunity to gather with the community with groups such as the local fire department, YMCA, and insurance companies, for a chance to get the kids active at a great venue, the Showare Center.

We brought our SERVPRO tent and our prize wheel and handed out goodies like rubber ducks and candy to all the community members!

Thank you to everyone in the community who came out. We were happy to get involved in our hometown.

Smokey the Bear made an appearance to tell the kids to "Remember.. Only you can prevent forest fires."

Events like these are important to us and we plan on continuing our involvement with activities like these to stay involved and active in our community.

Building Pop Up Parking Garages to avoid Storm Water

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Rising Storm waters can cause damage in Parking Garages

One of the biggest issues when heavy rains cause flooding lies underneath the commercial buildings of the Pacific Northwest.  As the amount of water flowing onto city streets overwhelms the drainage system, cars parked inside parking garages begin to take on water damage.

The issue is a worldwide one and important enough that Danish architects have drawn up plans to build parking garages that rise with the water level.

Until this type of system is common practice, making sure your building's drainage system is adequate is a top priority.

If the rains do overcome the drainage system, SERVPRO is available to mitigate the water in the structure as well as restore the vehicles that received damage.

Why SERVPRO?

Since we are locally owned and operated, we are able to respond quicker with the right resources, which is extremely important. A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces the restoration cost.

When the Power is Out, the Generator should Stay Out as well

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Always place your generator Outside of the home for safety

When the lights start to flicker one's first instinct is to grab the flashlights to be ready if the power goes out.

There is a large number of homeowners and businesses that own generators that can keep the vital systems in a building running.

The generators, which run on gas, exhaust fumes very similar to your automobile.  Making sure these fumes don't come back into your home is extremely important.

Generators should be placed Outside in order to exhaust the fumes out into the open.  Even putting the generator int he garage is not safe practice, the generator should be outside of the home and venting away from any fresh air inlet.

When the power goes off and your property sustains property damage, call SERVPRO to do your repairs and mitigate the damage.

Cold weather storms can cause damages to your home

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Trees are often the cause of property damage during a storm

Severe freezing with high winds are a recipe for downed trees which can cause property damage.  Every year the Puget Sound experiences a few storms that pass through leaving millions of dollars in property damage.

The biggest source of property damage comes by way of downed trees which fall onto the roofs of homes.

Damage to Gutters and Siding are just a couple of the types of damage a home will incur.  Broken windows and roof penetrations are two types of damage that require emergency mitigation services to cover up the opening in the structure.

When damage from the cold and wind occur SERVPRO is the choice for repairing your damaged home.

Regular inspection of Fire Sprinklers

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Sprinkler Maintenance is a Top Priority

Of the many tasks assigned to a Maintenance Manager, making sure the building's sprinkler system is in proper working condition is on the top of the list.

Fire suppression during a building fire replies on the sprinkler system doing it's job of containing/eliminating the fire.

Different types of materials within the structure, along with the amount of time the materials were in contact with the fire, will affect the level of damage that a building incurs.

Once the fire is extinguished, knowing how to properly mitigate and repair the building with the various materials in it is important.

If you find yourself needing mitigation for your fire damage give SERVPRO a call today.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Keeping your HVAC system clean reduces the chance for mold to grow

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Keeping your HVAC system clean reduces the chance for mold to grow

Mold in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems can cause serious health problems. When the furnace or air conditioner is turned on,  microscopic mold spores can blow out of the air ducts and circulate through the air, where they are easily inhaled.

Keeping your Ducting and the Intake clean is vital to reducing the amount of contamination your HVAC system has.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Top 5 culprits of a leaking commercial roof

3/9/2018 (Permalink)

Clogged drains are a top reason for many roofing leaks on commercial buildings

Sitting in the entryway of the Advertising firm's office in Downtown Seattle, John felt a light sprinkle hit his hand as he was checking his email.

"Maybe it was just in my mind" he said to himself as he brushed the feeling off as accident.  Then cam another drip....and another.....John looked to the ceiling to find one of the ceiling tiles with a ring of moisture.

There were strong winds and rain in the prior week but today was sunny and not a cloud in the sky.  It was obvious to John that something wasn't right so he contacted his building's maintenance manager and asked him to take a look.

The maintenance manager knew the water was coming from the roof , and that it was probably one of the 5 problems that normally cause water damages in commercial roofs.

  • DAMAGED PERIMETER FLASHING

  • OPEN ROOF PENETRATIONS

  • ROOFING MEMBRANE DAMAGE

  • AGE OF THE ROOFING SYSTEM

  • PONDING WATER OR CLOGGED DRAINAGE

Once the source was identified the work began to clean up the damaged building materials that the leak had caused.  Trying to do this while still keeping the office running meant calling SERVPRO to help mitigate the damage.

Burning food can cause odors in your home

Why does the last 5 minutes of a football game on TV seem to take an hour? You decided to make that salmon dish your uncle was telling you about so you prepped for it first thing this morning.

Start of the 4th quarter you decided to put it into the oven right as your team fell behind 14 points and the game seemed over.

That's when the magic started!  The rookie they just drafted gets put in the game and the biggest comeback in franchise history starts.

They tie up the game with 10 seconds left as the wide receiver torched the defender.  Torched him so bad you can smell the burning as if you were there.

Wait.....that's not torched defender...that's your Salmon burning in the oven!

It's happened to us all, we see it every day.  If this happens to you call SERVPRO and we'll come out and repair the damage.  Not all smoke and soot are the same, and trained professionals like we have at SERVPRO know how to deal with each type that occurs.

The Top 3 reasons your Roof might be leaking

Roofs are often susceptible to water damage that can lead to structure and mold issues if not addressed.  There are several ways water can infiltrate building materials surrounding a roof and the top 3 are:

  • Water pipes leaking or dripping
  • Condensation inside your home

  • Clogged gutters and downspouts

Most of the issues relating to a roof leak can be avoided by doing routine inspections of the attic/roof area on a regular basis.

Floor Replacements can often be avoided with advanced floor drying technology

Advanced Drying Equipment restoring a damaged floor

The kitchen lights turn on as you rub the sleep out of your eyes and stumble towards the coffee maker.  Two steps in you realize the smooth wooden floor you’ve walked across every morning for the last two years now feels different.

The smooth, dry floor you are accustomed to is now a cupped bundle of lumber that feels like it’s been soaked in the bathtub.  You quickly realize that the dishwasher you turned on as you went to bed the night before has been leaking water all over the kitchen.

The wood has begun to swell and buckle and your plans for a quiet Saturday morning reading the paper quickly turns into a call to SERVPRO for help.

For a lot of companies replacing a floor is the first choice to repair.  It seems like the quickest way in the moment, but there are weeks ahead of a compromised kitchen as replacement flooring is order.

There is a better choice though!  With skilled technicians and the latest in drying technology, SERVPRO can oftentimes dry the wood floor in place using a complex system of Dehumidifying Mats places on the floor and hooked up to a labyrinth of air hoses.

If you find yourself in this situation give SERVPRO a call, go ahead and make that coffee, we’ll be there soon to help get your life back to normal.

February will finish as Seattle’s first drier-than-normal month since September

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Blocked Drains after Heavy Rains = Great Pains

Looking back at the month of February, the wind and cold seemed to dominate the weather.  The Seattle Area experiences it’s first drier than normal month since September.

January, howevere, experienced much wetter-than-normal conditions as over 8 inches fell onto the roofs of Seattle.  The normal for the month of January is just shy of 6 inches.

The extra rain in January, coupled with winds, meant several building owners were performing inspections to make sure the drain vents weren’t clogged and holding water.

Several times throughout the year SERVPRO clients will call when a blockage on their roof suddenly clears and overflows into the building.

Always check your roof/gutters after a particularly windy storm to make sure your drainage system is running smoothly.

Sometimes your Kitchen just needs to Vent

We’ve all been there, it seemed like a good idea to cook the bacon on High heat but that Text from a friend or the person that distracted us from our stove was enough to make it happen.

“It” is that smell that enters your nostrils that makes your hard race as you run to the stove and turn down the heat.  As you fan smoke away from the pan you realize you’re spreading this smoke into other parts of the kitchen.  You reach for the fan and turn it on for the first time in a while.

Cranking the knob up to high you look over at the smoke detector and the race is on.

“Will the fan suck up the smoke before it gets to the smoke detector and informs everyone in the house you’ve just burned the bacon?”

The Kitchen Fan is mostly a Reactive function in the kitchen.  It rarely gets turned on until smoke comes out of a pan or that pot of water starts to fog up the room.

The perfect time to turn on the fan is actually Before you turn on the stove and start cooking.

The main purpose of the fan is to eliminate heat and odors from the cooking that you’re doing. The moisture and odors tend to stick to the walls of your kitchen.

The odors and moisture builds up and can turn your kitchen area into a feeding ground for microbial growth.

How do you reduce the chance for moisture and odor issues in your kitchen? Be proactive and turn the Fan on every time you turn the stove on.

If you ever do run into issues in your Home or Commercial building reach out to SERVPRO and we’ll come out and take care of you.

Commercial Cleaning for the Health of your Office Building

Cleaning Hi Traffic Surfaces in your Office Building

Sitting in the waiting room at her Architect’s office, Jessica grabbed a magazine that was sitting on a table.  She read an article  the importance of cleaning “high traffic hard surfaces”  in commercial buildings.  The article showed several examples of hard surfaces that are commonly overlooked when commercial spaces are casually cleaned.

Door Knobs, Light Switches, Countertops, Equipment Controls, Chairs, Tables……….the list went on.

Jessica squirmed a little as she looked around the waiting area and imagined all of the people that had come before her who sat in her very seat.  “You can’t avoid germs altogether” she thought to herself, but still she wondered what steps an office took to make sure an acceptable level of cleanliness was maintained.

About that time David, one of the Firm’s Partners, came around the corner to great Jessica.  She asked David how his company kept the office clean as it looked like it was well maintained.

“Well, we really don’t have a regular cleaning company that comes in, we all just pitch in and Pam at the front desk handles everything out front.  We do, however, hire SERVPRO once a month to come in and do a deep clean of high traffic areas”.

Jessica nodded and smiled, “I think I’m going to have them help maintain this new Tenant Improvement Job you guys are working on, let’s go look at the updated plans for the project David”...

If you have a commercial space you’d like SERVPRO to come out and do a deep cleaning, feel free to contact us today!

2017 was a big year for Residential and Commercial construction and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight!

Downtown Seattle alone experienced an additional 5,700 homes, almost 4 million square feet of office space, and 600+ hotel rooms.

Though these numbers are staggering, they are expected to rise by the time 2020 comes around.  In 2020 planners expect more than 17,000 homes to be built!

With the new square footage comes the challenges of making sure your Property Damage Emergency Services are pre planned Before an incident occurs.

SERVPRO of Kent works with Contractors, Building Owners, and Property Management Companies to set up Emergency Ready Plans.

This No Cost program gathers all of your important site/building information and makes it easily accessible if an event occurs.

This information is in physical form but is also available via Online (as well as our Free App) for your entire Team to access.  This information can be transferred from the General Contractor to the Property Management Team as the structures are commissioned.

New Cleaning Technology for SERVPRO of Kent Customers

State of the Art Soft Goods Cleaning Technology

When property damage occurs the initial focus is often on the larger pieces of someone’s life that was affected.  A roof, the kitchen floor, or the finished basement that needs to be repaired if the main focus of most involved.

When the dust of emotions and initial response settles the less noticeable pieces to someone’s life or business then presents itself.  The focus then moves to the “little things” in life that bring far more value than a dollar amount.

The blanket that your Aunt made.  The stuffed animal that your daughter won at the State Fair when she was 8.  Even those pair of shoes you bring out for special occasions, the ones they don’t even make anymore.  These are all items that sure, you could say are worth $9 for a stuffed animal, but honestly is there really an amount of money that can reimburse you for your emotional attachment?

At SERVPRO of Kent we had seen several customers that went through the painful process of “being reimbursed” for their contents throughout the years.  We wondered if there was something we could do to improve the level of services that we were providing.  There was a definite need based on the feedback we had received.

In June SERVPRO of Kent made the decision to invest in the Equipment and Training needed to provide state of the art soft contents cleaning in house.  SERVPRO of Kent is now using the Industry leading Esporta System to clean soft goods contents to Food Grade levels.  This has resulted in less items thrown away, lower claims costs, and a better experience for our customers.

The cleaning technology we now have in house is capable of cleaning a variety of soft goods:

– winter boots

– hiking boots

– leather slippers

– suede coats

– leather coats

– suede handbags

– leather handbags

– suede or leather hats

– stuffed animals or dolls

– throw or bed pillows

– bedding

– curtains or drapes

If you would like to learn more about the technology and process SERVPRO of Kent uses on soft goods cleaning please contact us today at 206-282-9500

Summertime Water Conservation Tips

7/5/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your plants happy and your water bill low with a few simple points.

With summer now in full swing, it's time to consider how to keep your lawn and garden it tip top shape while also considering how to keep your water bill down. Here are a few tips from Popular Mechanics on how (http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/lawn-garden/how-to/g559/9-water-conserving-tips-for-summer-gardening/):

  • Don't over water - a good rule of thumb is that a lawn needs 1 inch of water a week and perennial plants and shrubs will need from 1 inch to 2 inches a week. When in doubt, keep the plant's soil lightly moist and see how it responds. Over-watering is just as bad as under-watering; it leads to root rot and soil compaction that robs the roots of air.
  • Water in the morning - If you water while it's (relatively) cool outside, water can soak in before it evaporates on the surface. And if you do it in the morning, that helps the plant to take up the water during the day.
  • Don't waste water - Don't soak the plant's foliage; it does little good. If you see water puddling or running off, stop; let the water soak in before resuming. Likewise, water that runs off your lawn or off the top of a flower bed onto paved surfaces does no good. The same applies to running lawn sprinklers: Water your lawn, not the side of your house or the driveway.

Mold - Things You Need to Know

4/17/2017 (Permalink)

Control moisture and reduce your odds of mold - SERVPRO of Kent can help!
  • There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  • If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  • Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  • Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Fire Prevention Tips for your Kent Home/Property

1/23/2017 (Permalink)

A few small steps can go a long way to prevent fire incidents at your Kent home/property.

"It’s always good to find out you’re going to be working from home…

Unless you’re a firefighter."

According to the National Fire Protection Association (http://www.nfpa.org/news-and-research/fire-statistics-and-reports/fire-statistics/fires-in-the-us), in 2015, there were 500,000+ structure fires causing $10+ billion in property damage! Structure fires were reported every 63 seconds!

Here are a few tips to prevent a fire at your Kent home or property, provided by the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/get-help/prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/fire/home-fire-preparedness):

  • Keep items that can catch on fire at least three feet away from anything that gets hot, such as space heaters.
  • Talk to children regularly about the dangers of fire, matches and lighters and keep them out of reach.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside every sleeping area. Also, install a carbon monoxide alarm in a central location outside each separate sleeping area.
  • Check electrical wiring in your home.
  • Avoid overloading outlets or extension cords.
  • Make sure wiring is not under rugs, attached by nails, or in high traffic areas.

Have you checked your home or property for fire hazards recently? Have you had conversations with your family about what you would do in a fire emergency? What is your plan if a fire impacts your home?

SERVPRO of Kent specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire or smoke damage event and can help you get back on track after an incident.

Does Your Kent Home Have A Mold Problem?

9/12/2016 (Permalink)

In Kent, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Kent Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/29/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Kent Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Kent will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.
